Been doing some more reading. I was wondering if a 10 gallon tank is a big enough quarantine tank for new fish? Not sure what kind of fish, but we want a few species of small fish for a community tank. Our main tank is a 29 gallon. A friend is offering her 10 gallon free. If it will work, I need to get it cycling asap. We plan to add only one species at a time, once we decide what to get.

Hi MontyJ and Welcome to TFF,

If you've got room for a 10G then great! Go for it! A 5.5G would do it really but a 10G will give you more flexibility and can be a bit nicer tank for the fish as they wait out their time.

It's ideal of course to figure out which of your desired species are the hardiest and best for the first stocking after the fishless cycle (if that's what will happen on the main tank.) For instance, Harlequins (Rasbora Heteromorpha or whatever their new name is) are my pick for a fish that's even hardier than the traditional Zebra Danios in the competition for hardiest first fish. Platies are also quite hardy. The more delicate fish can come later!

The main tank is currently being fish-less cycled. I just started it today, so we have time to figure out what to put in it. I'll go ahead and get the 10 gallon going. Thanks for the help.
