I'd really like to get some pygmy cories to scavenge the bottom of my tank, but I have a gravel substrate in there which I hear isn't the best for them. What will happen if I go ahead and put them in anyway?

Otherwise, what are my options for bottom dwellers in a 10 gallon tank?

You might just get away with it if your gravel is smooth. But sand looks way cooler and is easier to clean, even with a net.

With pygmys i think you can get away with literally any substrate as they are so small, their mouths are like pin heads.

Yeah, that's the thing, it's not that smooth... I jumped head first into this and bought whatever I could find at walmart. Now i'm scrambling to get the best out of it...haha. New house this summer, so i'll get a 55 gallon or something for which i'll make sure to plan as much as possible ahead!

i wouldnt bother with pygmys now then, they will get lost in a 55g! plan ahead ;)

Smooth gravel is the key. This tiny C. habrosus did just fine with its gravel substrate.

The actual environment they come from dos not have sand or gravel. It is a muddy bottom often littered with leaves that are decaying in the water. Sand is oft6en suggested because it is a smaller particle size and people really don't want mud in their tanks.
