Getting some of my fish tomorrow/Sunday and just realised I'm not exactly sure of how to put them in the tank (for people of average intelligence like me, not all that stuff about dripping water in with the airlinje Nobody the Goat just flatteringly thought I'd understand).

So I've got the fish in the bag floating in the tank..talk me through it! :)

Leave them in the opened bag in the tank with the lights off, and add a bit of tank water in every 10 minutes or so for an hour, then release :)
I say add a bit of water every so often because to want to slowly adjust them to your water chemistry, more slowly for more sensitive fish, for hardier fish doing it over 20-30 minutes is fine...but generally take your time with it and all will be fine

edit: let us know how you get on

Yup,good advice. Although, I would say 30 mins for more sensitive fish and 20 for hardier, adding water every 10 mins from the tank to the bag. But it totally depends on you.

Hi,

Pretty much as already described, this is what I do:

1. Untie the bag and roll down the sides and it should then float on top of the water.

2. Leave it floating with lights off for about 10-15 mins to allow the water in the bag to slowly aclimatise the the same temp as the water in your tank.

3. As mentioned, then add a cupful of tank water into the bag every 10 mins or so, I do this for an hour to be sure, this slowly gets the fish used to your tank parameters such as PH etc, I sometimes loosely tie the bag back up each time rather than leaving it floating open, depends if your have fish that are likely to jump in the bag.

4. After an hour, or 30 mins depending on how you choose to do it, always add the fish to your tank by netting them and putting them into the tank, NEVER pour in the water from the lfs, always catch the fish one by one from the bag and move them to the tank, this just minimises any risk of spreading disease if there was any probs with the tanks at the lfs, you dont want there tank water mixing with yours.

5. Leave lights off for an hour so they feel more relaxed and less stressed, I also dont feed on the day I add fish because there is no way of knowing when the new fish were last fed at the lfs, unless you ask of course

6. Enjoy watching your new fish

Thanks everyone, just what I needed to know.

Do Platys, Gouramis or Corys jump?

All fish can jump around if stressed or frightened...

Everyone has given you good info :good: i personally roll the top of the bag down, then use a peg to hold the bag against the top of the tank due to my filters at the top have quite a strong current and nearly sunk a bag that go caught in its flow...

Good luck with your new fish, pics when they've settled in :)

Thanks, Just to explain a bit, where the longer time span helps is when you have a fish used to one particulat pH which you need to have in another...for example blue rams "should" be in < 7 pH, but they can go into ph 7.5 ish fine so long as you introduce them very slowly...

For the most part I haven't gone past 30 minutes, but suggesting 60 minutes just loses time but not fish :)

Hi guys, thanks again.

I'll do it over an hour. No harm in spending the time I figure.

Gah, just switched my light on and clearly my BW still has tannins coz my sand is bright YELLOW!!!!

MIX THAT UNDER I think :)

That airline drip acclimitisation method I posted in your other thread, twinklecaz, is great for sensitive fish I was told, as it is a slow but constant addition of your tank water to their shop tank water ;)

Floating the bag in your tank and adding a cup of water every 15 minutes works just as well for most fish I was told, but my trusted LFS said the drip feed means no sudden change in the bag water. Also, do try and put a cover over the floating bag, just in case any of the new fish decide to take up "swan diving" onto your tank room floor!

So, have you decided on just Platties or Gourami aswell today?

Prob both if I can. If they don't have the Gouramis I want though then I'll take that as fate and just get the Platys :)

Tank all planted and ready. Just waiting a bit for the temp to stablise and then I'll test the water too in a bit.

Hope the plants are ok. It's really difficult planting in sand isn't it?

:good:

I thought it was easy, what made it difficult? All I did was shove them in and they've grown roots now

Lol yeah I did that with some of them. A lot of them had quite a lot of root alread and it was diffcult to get it under the sand.

I can't decide if it looks unstructured or a comeplte mish mash.
