I've only had to kill one fish and that was a zebra danio. I did the deed by cutting its head off with a knife. I never realised their head can still be functioning for up to one hour afterwards

I thought decapitation would be quick and painless for the fish. Poor fishy

Need to try clove oil next time.

Presumably if you decapitate you have then got to destroy the brain; so that would be why my mackerel stabbings worked; they were certainly dead straigthaway. Oh dear, I feel quite guilty now, but ...well, you do need to eat. At least it was a lot more humane than would have happened to the fish you buy in the supermarkets. And I am going off topic.
