so im fixing a leak in my tank, ive just lowered the water level to below where the leak is which is where it will have to stay for a day until the silicone sets. unfortunately this means the filter is spewing water out and its making quite a racket when it hits the water. problem is its in my bedroom, i'll never get to sleep tonight. so im hoping i can turn the filter off, it will only be for about 5-6 hours as i will be home late tonight and up for work at 5am. i didnt feed today either, so the water is nice and clean, ive got an ex1200 filtering 140L of water at full whack. though obviously now its filtering even less water at the same flow rate until i get home between 11 and 12 tonight.

so you reckon i'll be alright to turn it off ? i was going to put some pipe on the outlet and run it to the surface, but i havnt got any, i binned it all about a week ago hahaha.

no can do. its a crook type eheim one, already as low as it goes.

If you overdose with a dechlorinator that also detoxifies ammonia (something like Prime) and remove the media from the filter and put it in the tank it should be ok. I would expect a spike after starting it back up again and my only worry would be that you're leaving it for 12 hours and won't be able to monitor it. You also need to think about keeping your tank oxygenated, do you have an air stone you can use?

I left it on in the end, ive bodged a chunk of filter floss at the end of the pipe, its more quiet than it normally is hahaha. Cheers
