I have a small tank in my bedroom, at the moment it has a 'fluval one' in it, but its pretty noisy and im having trouble sleeping. Can anyone recommend a quieter pump I could get for a small tank. The tank is about 25 ltrs so not big at all.

If you mean a quieter filter then is your filter completely submerged?.....Ive got a fluval 1 in my tetra tank in my bedroom and I cant hear it, the water level 'just' covers the top of it so that the water flow ripples the water but maybe its a problem with the filter.

Have you cleaned the impella, that might be it?

Yes its properly submerged, it gets cleaned once sometimes twice a week. It has about 1 cm water about it like the instructions have said. I have tried moving it around but nothing seems to help :(

Ive had no problems with my fluvals but I have read a good few posts on here with people slagging them off. Most of my tanks are Juwel tanks so they have their own built in filter, the only two other filters I have in other tanks is the fluval and an interpet PF2 in my lobster tank which Ive found to be fine.

Problem is that the shop might not replace it since they might not be able to test your one against another one in the shop without submersing them in water, the SHOULD replace it but it depends where you got it, if its a resonably big shop or a chain you probably wont have a problem, if its just a little shop with some 14 year old behind the counter who couldnt tell a guppy from a goldfish they might try to fob you off.

How long can the tank go for without a pump in it? I mean if I am taking it back, the tank will have no pump for about 2 hours will that be ok?

The problem will be that your new filter wont be cycled, the only way you'd be able to do it is if you got the new filter and ran that in the tank along side the one you have till the bacteria grows then it would be safe to remove the fluval but that kinda defeats the purpose unless yo go into the shop and explain the problem to them, buy a new filter from them on the understanding they give you a cash refund for the fluval if it does prove to be faulty..?

.....either that or buy some ear plugs?

Sorry Big Mick has basically said what i was going say.

Your Tank will be fine without a filter for 2 hours but the problem arises with the fact that you will be replacing it with a brandnew filter, just like cycling your tank again, the filter media in your current filter will have seeded by now, meaning it wil have the proper bacteria in order it to sustain a cycled tank, by taking it out you will be removing that bacteria which will cause your tank to re-cycle again and cause a nitorgen spike, this will either kill the fish in tank or cause them undue stress.

In my opinion the price of a fluvel 1 out weighs the loss of fish, basically buy a new filter, i dont have any experience with internal filters as i have only used external filters. Buy a new filter ( research a new filter for the tank so you know it is a quiet one) and run it along with the old filter for upto six weeks, that should be enough time to seed the new filter then remove the old noisey filter

Again this is just what i would do in you situation. Hope this helps :)

I agree......a new filter will set you back £20 tops, probably no more than £15.....small price to pay for piece of mind and a good night sleep!

Nice to see a Glasgow boy in the forum Loachylover.

I work in a LFS and if any brings a filter back and needs replacing we swap the media, so they keep there old stuff and we nick the stuff out of the replacement one. If your LFS doesn't do this when they swap it, ask them to, jus take the sponges there in a fish bags to keep them moist.

Have you tried cleaning the impeller as a bit of grit may of got stuck in there.
