Are there and types of freshwater puffer that would work in a 21G apart from dwarfs?
If not then would 6 be fine? and what male female ration?
And what sort of tanks do puffers like? this is the tank now. Would that work or not?

:D

figure 8 puffer you could have a pair you would need some plants though as they live in weed filled steams plenty of hygrophelia polysperma and java ferns

Yes, there is a 'truely' freshwater Pufferfish called the South American Puffer.
Yes, this Puffer is one of the few which can be kept in groups or single, because they arent aggressive towards eachother. In your tank around 3-4 is the max
Male-Female ratio is irrelavent as these fish don't interact with eachother or shoal and they just stay out of eachothers way.
These fish come from the Amazon in Colombia-Venezuela region, so blackwater withplenty of bogwood and plants and slighty dimmed is prefered. Keep with fish from same area like Tetras or Apistos or Rams but not longfin or slow species that can't defend themselves (Discus/Angelfish)with these puffers as they can do a tiny bit of fin nipping  .
And have a constant supply of snails to feed these because of their teeth! :hey:
And also don't confuse these fish with their close larger identical Brackish water cousin, the Colomesus psittacus.

Here is some info on these fish

Would they be alright with BNs? i plan on setting up a big tank for my bns+fry and a few trios of apisto so would they work in there?
How common are they? and what sort of price are they?

Yeah they don't bother plecos or apistos but they will eat fish babies. In terms of availability, they are uncommon, Here in London few shops have them and they are around £10 each some places sell them for £18. But there well worth it! :good:

Finally got back to Aquajardin this afternoon, so here as promised, some puffer clips (Borneoo Striped (salivator); Red Tail Red Eye (irrubesco)...

The Salivator looks awsome, I'm so tempted to buy and set up a species only Clearseal 30"x12"x15" tank (using my spare, currently supplemental filter)

Thanks Ill have a look into the irrubesco i like the look of them.

I've kept 3 little south american puffers in a 25 gallon before. They make a great social community with each other and doo poorly with most other fish. Fish to keep with them that are odd combos but do well would include

- a candy stripe/clow pleco
- Peacock eel (they stay buried a lot and if are treated with agression have a way to get away from them in a stress free way, but you'd need sand!)

Both of these seemed to get along great in my 25 tall with them. The tall tank seemed to suit puffers too. the like to swim up and down and around the whole length.

Keep in mind, plecos and puffers are two of the most waste creating fish! Clean clean clean!

Well i plan on setting up a tank between 5-6 foot with a 15or21G sump just for the bns+fry and a few trios of apisto so im sure a few would fit in alright and there shouldnt be to many problems with waste.

Awesome! I'm about to set up a six footer and log it on here too. I hope your exp. goes as well shared with mine :D

I plan for my big tank to be set with a family of clown loaches, my albino senegal, and a black ghost knife. not sure what else yet
