Hi
i am setting up a new tank which will contain a lot of rock, i am using Juwel 3D backgrounds to protect the back and side pannels. but i am worried about the bottom pannel. should i use egg crate, but i am worried this will cause the sand to gather and do something horrible, ive read about it?!?!

My black sand gets here on thursday so as many suggestions beffore then woould be useful.

additionally, i filled the rio 180 with tap water a week ago, and have left the pump on and the heater on, will this have got rid of the chlorine??

Cheers guys
Jack

How much and how large of rock are you using? Egg crate works fine if you have a lot of heavy rock but isn't necessary in all cases. I have several pounds of rock in my 55g and no eggcrate though I have the stuff handy if I add more. I think there's something like 20-25 pounds sitting there, plus another 4-6 pounds of sand with it. And don't worry about the sand and gas build up. Even if there were to be a gas pocket, it would be undisturbed until you were doing something that was enough to jostle it free and all it would do is go straight up. There shouldn't be any fish deaths and at worst, you'd smell rotten eggs for a minute or two.

It's something of a myth that anaerobic bacteria will build up toxic gases that will kill your fish if left unchecked. I fell for it as do a lot of people but doing research on it, I've found a lot of people saying it will happen but no one who has had it happen, or knows anyone who did. It's just one of those presumed things that no one can verify. Sure you might get the gas pockets but just like aerators, all it does is go straight up and cause minor ripples on the water, not enough to gas your fish. :p

slightly off topic but does anyone know of any aquarium scratch remover. i have a few scratches on the inside of my tank and was wondering if there was any way to remove the scratches.

k thanks
i dont really know how much but im cramming 15 demasoni in so must make huge amounts of caves.
quite a lot!!!

What do you reckon?

cheers

You can also use styrofoam (polystyrene) to protect the bottom glass. Place a sheet down, then your rock(s) and finally spread your substrate around the rock(s)

Regular polystryrene???

Also i was going to attach the background, 3d one, with magnets, would regular little magnets do fine in the tank?

Thanks

Don't bother, they wont hold. Use silicone instead :good:

The problem with sillicone is i am worried i will not be able to get rid of it when i change or sell? and the tank is already full and cycling

why would magnets not hold??

is it regular polysterene (sp?)

What you could do is remove around 50% of your water, wedge the background behind the substrate at the bottom, then just silicone the top. If its a tight enough fit it should hold. 24 hours later you can add the water again.

Silicone used to hold backgrounds on is simple to remove, so long as you don't put too much on.

Many people have tried holding backgrounds on with magnets but they have failed after a while (do a google search).

Polystyrene can be bought from Wickes for about £2 a sheet (4ft x 2ft x 2"). Hope that helps :)
