2 x Yoyo
4 x Moss Green Barb

What size tank do you have? I understand that the tiger barbs can be a bit aggressive and nippy. I ended up buying pentazona barbs (five-banded) instead as they are very peaceful, but best kept in a shoal of at least five or six.

Tank size is 48x18x14.

I keep reading everyones comments on the tiger barbs being nippy.. I guess the Moss Green Barbs will have similar traits? I was thinking ive I have 7-8 of them they might leave the others alone.. Is that gonna be wishfull thinking?

I think the barbs will probably still have a go at other fish, regardless of how many you keep together. Apparently, they tend to like fish with long fins and are best not kept with fish like gouramis. Check out tropicalfishfinder.co.uk. They are pretty helpful and have loads of listings for different species. Good luck!

Id remove the Tiger Barbs and by Moss Green do you mean the Velvet Green Tiger Barbs, if so remove them also. They are far more hassle than they are worth in a community tank. They will nip anything they can catch, to the point where they can and will shread the other fish's fins.

Rams shouldnt be kept in pairs, its far better to have 1 male to 2 or 3 females.

Mollies, Danios, Rasboras are all shoaling fish so ideally more than 6 of each. Id personally ditch the mollies and get more Danios (i love the Hi fin Zebra Danios)

Khuli loaches are tempremental so i personally wouldnt keep them, possibly replace with Cory's

I read up on the rams and thought they should just be in pairs so I got a male/female, liked the idea that they are faithful together, Oh well I must have been lucky as my 2 are so in love

you can be lucky with Rams, i have in the past, bu ive also seen a male and female almost batter each other to death fighting over territory becuase there was no love :(

Mollies are best with a bit of salt in their tanks, and personally I would add a few more Harliquins, in place of the barbs.

Looks like Im gonna have to pass on the Tiger Barbs.. Its a shame as I really like their colours and the fact they are very active..

Khuli loaches tempremental? How? I have read that you need to keep 5-6 of them otherwise they just hide and dont do much.. In larger groups they apparently "play" a lot together..

Did you manage to have a look at tropicalfishfinder. Like I said the pentazona barbs are very similar to the tiger barbs and really very peaceful. I have 6 in a community tank with tetras, threadfin rainbow, danios etc.
I have had no problems with them at all and they quite happily swim about with the other fish. :good:

Khuulie loaches temperamental? Well, if you call running away and hiding temperamental- I've certainly never known them to lay into anything. They used to be my favourite fish- I would buy some again, except this time I want to do the proper thing and provide sand for them, and I'm not quite ready for the upheaval yet.

About your original list- I wouldn't necessarily say pass on the barbs- as you say, they are lovely fish. And certainly there is no rule saying you can't keep barbs, hundreds of people keep barbs quite happily. (The green moss are a colour morph of tigers anyway, so should school together.). What I would suggest is deciding from the start whether this is going to be a rumbunctious tank (barbs, maybe yoyo loaches, bristlenose, danios) or a gentle tank (rams, khuulies, dwarf gouramis- 1 m, 1-2 f, harlequin rasboras- and the bristlenose can still come). Fish like dwarf gouramis could get very stressed out by the constant activity of the barbs or danios, but would be happy with the more gentle rasboras. Of course, the ideal solution to the problem is two tanks...

Stang1:

Just checked out the Pentazona Barbs on Tropical fish finder.. Looks like they might be a goer..

dwarfgourami:
My aim for the tank was to have as many different types fish and varied colours.. I might be after the impossible as I was hoping to have a mix of playful/excitable fish along with some more docile varieties..

I must say its much more complex than I imagined... I think im gonna have to take your suggestion of a more focused "theme" for the tank.. Would have to lean toward the rumbunctious side.. Ive got 1-2 weeks to do some more research while the tank cycles..

Thanks for your advice..

I see what you mean. There are still definite possibilities here.

In a peaceful tank, corydoras fill all reasonable criteria of playfulness, they are great fun to watch. Small livebearers are also quite good in this department (swordtails belong in the active setup though), and khuulie loaches once they start feeling confident come out and dance at night. And rasboras have good schooling behaviour.

In the more robust setup, bristlenoses do sit still quite a lot and are peaceful enough, but they are too tough to be picked on (unlike corys).
