This is what happens when you pick up all your info online... I'm pretty sure I know how to pronounce catfish, or livebearer, they seem pretty simple. But what about cichlid?

Just from the spelling I can think of 4 possible ways of pronouncing it.

Anyone like to clarify, then whine about the state of our education where people don't know how to read?

cichlid is pronounced like sicklid :good:

Pronouncing "sicklid" is the easy bit some of the names of them seem right tongue twisters and spelling them is worse. Its taken me ages to stop putting an extra R in Severum (kept putting serverum) still say it wrong half the time

when i first started i only had read cichlid so i thought for a while when reading it was chill-lid lol what number was that?

Geophagus Brazilliensis :hyper: I just call geo's

Chilll id? Uh that doesn't take into account the ch in the middle, and it also has an extra h at the start...

Geo, fay, jus?

:good: geophagus. Yeah, better than me I had to wait to hear Minxy say it lol

Hardest one for me I find is Thorichthys ellioti (thor ich this) but the Ellioti bit I never know if its Elli-ot or elli-ot-e? bit daft to breed a fish I cannot pronounce

As a prefix: geo- is taken from the Greek word γη or γαια meaning "earth", usually in the sense of "ground or land". Geo- is thus a prefix for many words dealing in some way with the earth, including:
taken from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Geo

The word esophagus is derived from the Latin œsophagus, which derives from the Greek word oisophagos , lit. "entrance for eating."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Esophagus

geophagus is thus a portmanteau of geo and oesophagus, literally meaning "earth-eater"

taht should clear up pronunciation for that word

Oh me too, which is it?

In my mind, I have been saying 'geof-a-gus' is it wrong?

Thorichthys - Thor-ik-thee-us
Geophagus - Geo-fay-gus
Cichlid - sicklid

I had this trouble when asking about Parachromis Dovii and Tilapia Buttikoferi.

I would call the Dovii... Dovey when its Dovey-eye

And the Buttikoferi i would call butter-co-fairy (lmao when its butt-er-kof-er-eye
