Questions #1:
I originally got two black/orange Variatus (one male, one female).  They got along great and the female even had babies.  Then a month or so later we added in another black/orange Variatus girl with more clear fins and they also seemed to get along fine.  Then we added in some tetras and a Yellow/Black Variatus girl a couple of months later and have been having trouble keeping the tetras alive, but that's in another thread, lol.  Anyways, ever since I added in the Yellow/Black female and the tetras my male has been SUPER aggressive.  He leaves either courts the Black/Orange female with the clear fins or leaves her completely alone, and he chases the original female and the Yellow/Black female like crazy, even to the point of slamming into them!  The Orange/Black female is really starting to seem tired, and the Yellow/Black just hides as best she can.  Any ideas???  I don't know what to do.  I was hoping they would get along well and make babies, etc, but now he's just being a jerk to them :(.

Question #2:
What is the best ground covering thing I should put in the tank to keep the babies from getting gobbled up?  They had about 5 babies once and within two days they were all gone :(.

Here are pics of my tank, and I can get more if you need them :), hopefully more clear ones too since I can use my husband's camera.  These were just taken with my phone.

Can either get more females to disperse the aggressive mating behaviour between them or get rid of him.

Do you think that's all it is?  That he's just mating aggressively?  He seems to just want to kill those two females... but maybe I'm wrong?

Baby variatus usually try to reach the surface of the tank. So there is no point in covering the ground. If you really want some to survie you would need to heavily plant it to give them hidding spots.

And yes some of them are simply aggressive towards other variatus and the only way to change that is by adding more fish of the same species to spread aggression as already mentioned or by providing more hiding spaces.

Thank you!  I'll get some more top cover and a few more ladies.  I appreciate your help ^_^.
