we are cycling 3 tanks right now ( 2 55 gallons and 1 30 gallon) and one of the 55 gallons are doing great but the other 55 gallon and 30 gallon tank is killing off the fish we put in there to cylce it out...we got all the fish from the same place and same tank..we feed them at the same time and have the lights on at the same time...we got the water from the same place...what could be wrong?

hi,
what fish are you using to cycle with, have you a test kit ? if so whats the readings for ammonia nitrite and nitrate.

hi,
it would be very helpful to post the readings, keeping a very close watch on the ammonia, i use a master test kit which is a liquid test kit its pretty good, some would say better than the test strips, all you can do until you get the readings is reg water changes, ammonia is the biggest killer of fish in the early stages of the cycle. how often do you do water changes?. also how many fish per tank have you got at the moment?.

we havn't changed the water in them yet so i'll try that...in the 30 gallon we had 5-10 and in the 55 gallon we had 10 (what the person at the store said)

how long have they been cycling?
your fish are dying from ammonia poisoning.
if you cycle with fish you have to do very frequent water changes.

Goldfish are one of the dirtiest fish you can keep (also one of the hardiest) so they will need a lot of regular water changes (possibly every day) until you get past the ammonia stage then towards the end of the nitrite stage this should get fewer. Also, they will need very good filtration. It would have been best to add a few fish to start with, then add an extra one or two with two week intervals until you were fully stocked. But for the time being just do a 50% water change and get some good quality ammonia testing and nitrite testing kits. Then you can change less water depending on the results than this daily until you get the right readings.

Hope this makes sense and good luck :good:

ten fish is a lot to cycle a tank with if you're using goldfish (or any type of fish, generally speaking); typically, you only need one or two. like catxx said, your fish are dying of ammonia poison because there are too many fish and not enough bacteria yet.

what type of goldfish do you have? you might want to especially feed the absolute minimum since you have a lot of fish in a developing tank, as less food equals less waste equals less ammonia. :)

hope everything works out!
