i just put my new 55g tank on the iron stand after leveling the stand, and i found the tank to be a bit wobbly when empty.

so i slipped a small, flattish piece of wood under one of the tank corners to level it. once i found it was leveled (i have this little tool to help me do that), i filled it 1/3 full with water and discovered that there were small gaps on all four sides between the tank and stand. only the 4 corners touched the stand.

is this cause for concern or am i just worrying too much?

With that amount of water and weight, I would want it completely level with the entire bottom/corners completely supported .

Oh dear, if you fill the tank the bottoms going to bow and most likely break. You need some coushioning between the tank and the stand, I use plywood then styrofoam. Make sure the entire bottom of that tank sits flat. Do not level the tank...level the stand from the bottom, this has to be done before it's full.

Like Fishyfreak said, level the stand not the tank. Put your shim under the stand leg and do not accept a wobhbly feeling tank on the stand. If you find it at all wobbly, something about the stand is out of adjustment or maybe just bent. When the tank is straight and level, the tank will not wobble. With the empty tank sitting securely on a flat stand, you can fill the tank. The edges of a tank have that plastic strip that runs around the bottom and holds the glass up of the stand. You do not want the glass itself to touch anything solid. That is the job for the plastic frame. If the glass does touch, any slight irregularity in the thing it is touching becomes a place where a crack can and probably will start.
