I got a juwel 180 and the light unit is playing up, the lights come on for a second or two, then go off. I think the ballast may have had it, what do you lot reckon, would the ballast cause that problem or just not work at all. I don't really want to spend out £75 on a new unit if I dont have to.

I have read on here you can replace the ballast but I cant seem to find a ballast for 2x25w T8 on the auction site, anyone know where else I can look?

thanks for any help you can give

Danny

Sounds like you just got it? Can't you take it back for an exchange?

A new fixture that is not staying on should be returned. As you have speculated, the most likely problem is a ballast issue but any new fixture should work right. End of statement.
If the manufacturer will not take care of things, I would certainly avoid buying any replacement ballast from them. Ballasts are interchangeable and a poor quality one would never tempt me to replace it with another of the same brand.

Typical of the Juwel light bars to do this, I advertised my spare T8 bar a few months back on classified. I get on average 1/2 mails a week still asking if I still have it because their ballast has blown.

AFAIK the newer ballasts are a lot more reliable and it seems to be the ones which are a few years old that have high failure rate, Though the relation to age and failure may be the case. I tried looking for a ballast for the Juwel bar I had for safety incase mine did die, I couldn't find any ballast to fit my requirements.

There's not much you can do other than attempt to repair it or buy a new one. The design of the Juwel aquariums kind of ruin the look if you put any other type of light on it.
