I was moving my 30gal tank to a new location in the house today and while draining half the water and watching things carefully I noticed one of my zebra danios belly was very swelled up. It was in the morning and they had nothing to eat so I know he wasn't just full. I thought for a minute she might be sick or balloted but she swam fine with the rest of the fish and still looks clean and healthy.

The tank has about 6 danios, 8 rasboras, a couple rosy barbs and 1 big anglefish. I know nothing about fish breeding except for the fact the fry will not survive in a community tank full of other fish and that you need to separate them. While I was draining the tank the pregnant danio got sucked through the hose into the bucket, I don't believe it was injured because the hose is 1'' and could fit a few of them. anyway I had a spare 10gal layin around so I set it up with some gravel and a few fake plants from the other tank to separate it from the other fish but make it feel safe still. I did not add a filter because I fear the fry would be sucked up if I'm not there when they come out. Right now I just have the heater and an airstone at the bottom to keep some circulation and oxygen in the water. Unfortunately she seems to be swimming around frantic in the tank still after about 8 hours. I'm just looking for advice on how to keep her in a good environment to feel safe and successfully have babies. Should I move her back to the main tank but keep her in one of those fish bredding nets?
I'm still doing a lot of searching and research on other forums but If anyone has any quick advice to help me I would appreciate it

hello there, from what I have read, Danio's can not be pregnant, they are egg layers. I would keep her separated to see how she goes. she may well have bloat. just keep an eye on her, cheers

HI,
Yeah defo to the question about keeping her in the main tank.
I used a fry net for my guppies and it worked fine. Im not experienced enough whether the danio is pregnant or not but my guppies swellup when pregnant but they have babies instead of laying eggs but keeping her in the main tank is a must.

Also this is the best forum for advice on fish keeping you dont need to go elsewhere, everyone here are a friendly bunch of people.

good luck with that.

haha, you must have found this post in a few other forums :)

I understand now that the female spreads the eggs and the male will come up to fertilize them. Should I put a male in the hospital tank with her and take them both out when her belly goes down? Or should I just put her back in with everything else?

Since its going to be eggs tho I probably will not be able to see them and when they hatch do they just go everywhere or will they school around the danios?

Whats the best method to use that will make this work?

hi danios are egglayers they also pair for life i would put her back in the main tank and let nature run its course if any fry do survive move them to another tank or they will get eaten. :good:

Thanks guys. I'll put her back right away. Is there going to be any problem that she has been seperated over night? will the other fish be territorial to her and will the male still have something to do with the eggs?

Also I will keep a very close eye on when her belly goes away but how soon after fertilizing will the eggs hatch and how fast do you think they will get eaten?

Like I said theres some rasboras, rosy barbs and a big anglefish.

eggs and fry with angel fish? uh oh.

Should I remove the angle fish and seperate it for now? Like I said I have another 10gal and even a 20gal that I could rig up to be used for a month or so.
hi again i would put this time down to experience but they are not that dificult to breed. Set your smaller tank up with gravel on the bottom to catch the eggs put the male and female in then raise the temp to about 78 then they should spawn. After they have move the adults back to the main tank. A couple of days later you should start to see fry. parents will eat the eggs and fry if left in the tank. Make sure you rest the female before u try.Hope this helps :good:

thanks,

I have 3 other danios in the tank tho so How do I know which is the male and does it need to be a " certain " male? Also how long after her belly goes away should I wait to take them out? does the male need a while to fertilize them?

And what do you mean rest the female before I try? Try what?

She is back in my main display tank right now But I still have the 10 gallon set up so I will put her and a male back in there?

Thanks.

Firstly, do you have a picture of the fish so we can judge if it's actually an eggy female as opposed to a constipated/ill fish?

And secondly, just leave them alone in the main tank and feed them a good high protein diet. They would appreciate a nice range of high quality flake, pellets and bloodworm. This will 'condition' them, and hopefully they will spawn in the main tank and you will see which male has paired with the female.

Then in the future you can condition the pair in the main tank and then move them to the 10gal to spawn.

However it's a better idea to use a bare bottomed tank as it's easier to clean. And use a spawning mop (google it) to catch the eggs. :)
