Pre Filters Or Covers

I am trying to come up with a material to cover the input pipe of my HOB filter to improve filtration, appearance and bacteria bed.

When you say "improve filtration" what do you mean? Do you want more mechanical filtration, more biological filtration, more circulation, etc.?

A pre-filter sponge works well for fry tanks to decrease the flow going into the filter so that the fry don't get sucked in.



The pre-filter sponge will make the intake tube LARGER, which might be less visually pleasing. The addition of the sponge would increase the surface area for bacteria to colonize.

yeah, my thoughts too. and any additions will restrict the flow of the filter.

I want to wrap the filter intake in a "mesh" so that there is more Mechanical filtration and more area for Biological filtration. I would also like it to have a pleasing appearance.
I have always been amazed that the filter intakes and pre-filter sponges are black instead of green.

If it's extra mechanical filtration you want, then some nylon tulle is the best stuff; it's what those kids beach fishing nets on a long cane are made from. I find tights and that sort of thing far too fine and it clogs too quickly and badly reduces the flow of water through the filter. There wouldn't be enough volume to give any extra bio filtration, but would keep your exsisting media in the filter 'cleaner'.

If you want the extra bio media, then a coarse filter sponge with a hole cut in it for the intake would work best.
