Well after reading all the negative posts on here about P@H i thought i would start a positive post. Maybe that way people will realise that there are some very good ones out there!!

I have been to alot of places in my area over the last few weeks, including P@H but have to say that Maidenhead Aquatics in Ashton Under Lyne is by far the best one!! The staff are friendly and very knowledgable and always have time to chat to you.

I cant reccommend this place enough!!!

QSS in Bradford very experienced, good bunches of plants, fish well looked after and helpful. Also Tingley tropicals gets some cracking fish in and odd ones like rope/reed fish and of course Maidenhead south leeds has a very nice setup (only just opened)and a nice range of fish. Could do with a couple more staff, last time I was there people were huffing and walking out as it was really busy.

Swallow aquatics in harling is the best ive been to. the filtration on the tanks are amazing theres no substrate in the tanks but theres never any mess on the bottom of the tank plus ive never seen a dead or evan ill fish there. They are a little expensive but you pay for the quality.

Oasis in Salford is my number one. Knowledgable staff, always a good variety including adult fish, stunning display tanks. Closely followed by The Abyss in Stockport who's tanks are always immaculate.

The Pets at Home in Stockport is pretty good to be fair. They helped me out a lot when I first started up.

as far as lfs' go, I would say The Abyss is really good...pricey though, Seaview in Hazel Grove and of course MH@Woodford

Very much agree with gaz_s,

I live about 10 mins from tingley tropicals and they always have a good selection of healthy fish although the owners sarcasm can take a bit of getting used to

The new maidenhead aquatics section at carr gate garden centre J41 of M1 is fairly new, opened december 09 I believe but all the tanks are very clean and well looked after with some good young knowledgable staff. Wasnt very impressed with the plants selection though. The price match guarantee is good though.

QSS is by far the best I've been to round west yorkshire area and is the one I use the most regular even though its about 15 miles away, great selection of fish, from tropical to coldwater, no marine fish though. Any fans of guppies would love it as in the last month or so they have set up 20+ tanks of guppies, just about every colour you could imagine lol, great knowledgable staff who are very friendly as you normally come to expect from a family run business that has been in operation 30+ years

Paws for thought on york rd has also been recommended to me, only been there once about 2 years ago.

I second Swallowa Aquatics in East Harling, they have always been fantastic. They do cost a little more but it is worth it to know that the fish will have been well looked after.

I bought a new tank there last weekend and they happily switched the internal filter that was included with a more expensive, external filter - and didn't charge me extra. I did mention that Seapets were doing the same tank for £90 less which may have swayed them

Same goes for the Swallows in Rayleigh. I shopped there for a good few years before moving and never had any problems.

A Maidenhead Aquatics has just opened up near me aswell so I will be checking that out.

The guys at Ashton are so helpful!! They have been brilliant with me and my mum and the fish are always perfectly healthy. I think they keep them in QT for a week before you are allowed to buy them which gives you peace of mind!

Yes I agree. Maidenhead in Wigan is one of the best ones I've found.

Also good in the North West of England is the one in Leyland Garden Centre, Ulnes Walton which is called Aqualife. http/www.aqualifeonline.co.uk/

Maidenhead aquatics in Bristol are fab for good fish selection,staff fairly knowledgeable but don't smile or appear to have good customer relations... unless they've changed in the past few months...

One i usually go to is at a place called kennedys garden centre, place call themselves fish r us, literally a big shed out the back of the centre, nice quality fish, marine also, gotten all but 2 of my current fish from there.

Lovely workers made friends with them, any fish i brought at first but decided i didn't want so took them back weeks later (when deciding which fish i wanted to keep) he'd give me some money off the next lot i brought. Also gave me a big bag of cichlid pellets when i took some baby malawi's my brother didnt have room for in. Girl who worked there would give me and my mates the odd free fish or money off cos we where regulars.

Place called Andy's Aquatics on the Wirral Portsunlight- down the road from bromborough area is highly respected with me. There a few more I visit but never buy fish stock sometimes just food or equipment. AA has a large selection of tropical and marine and a lot of plants although not really the best quality at times. It's product range is extensive from thermometers to protein skimmers and everything in-between. A little pricey on some (specifically water treatments and plant ferts).

Healthy fish stock at reasonable prices, 48 hour guarantee (usually not long enough to cover your fish though) however most of the staff are very helpful and knowledgeable. Great that they also approve of fish-less cycling and understand its awesome benefits.

My best fish place is Fish Inc because the setups look wicked there, they have black sand and blacked out background so the fish colours really stand out including their cichlids and killifish. They have rare fish in there was a massive pufferfish wasn't mbu but really nice colours on it and was housed with one bala shark. Also with eels they don't just put them into any tank with no ornaments but they have placed in lots of black pipes on the surface for them to feel more comfortable. It can get quite busy and always has customers in but the main guy is verty cheerful and gives his customers a good tour for your tank. He also gives very good advice from his experience. Oh yeah thats where I bought my african congo cichlid from. I heard they are starting to go marine to. I have only been 4 times there and everytime I go its very exciting.

i forget the name of my local marine store as i dont really pay attention to names of places (got grilled when i wanted to go to a restaurant called pu-king ) but i went to my local petco and it was awseome and they were willing to special order and everything and had a much better selection than my old one, and the plants were not covered in algae and the girl there was really knowledgeable. and she put the tiger barbs away from the other fish and in gruops to avoid the things tiger barbs do, and they treated their goldfish with much more respect (though still overstocked, cant be perfect)

i went to maidenhead aquatics in pontarddulais the other day. their choice of fish was amazing and had some beutiful marine setups there. the staff were quite happy and seemed helpful enough. even the people in the pet centre there seemed to have some knoledge aswell im new to the hobby but was amazed at the variety and coice of both marine and freshwater fish. all the fish were in really good condition and there were non of the dead fish etc you see in some. top dogs for selection fair play!
