I'm clueless with these. Do they replace the spray bar from an external filter or are they simply an additional item?

Additional item, created more movement in the water. Most point them at "dead spots" in the tank. Thats where the filter isn't picking up so well.

This is a power head, laying on my desk top.

It is used to promote water flow wherever it is needed. I use mine to move water through sponge filters but planted tank people use them to circulate water and avoid dead spots in their tanks. If you want to simply move water, they are a great tool to do it.

Can they be added to the outlet of an external filter in order to. I'd like to add one but I'm trying to avoid having to much in the tank
