Is there any problem as far as anyone knows with using a power head upside down? I want to get the flow close to the substrate surface for my clown loaches but don't want to suck up sand. The design points to motor up/intake down configuration but is this absolutely necessary?

My Koralias can run upside down. I would think as long as it doesn't draw sand into the propeller it should be okay.

Depends on the design. Circulation type pumps like koralias seem fine either way, but the traditional type like youd put on a ugf uplift tube can cavitate and he really noisy upside down. All you can do is try it and see what happens I guess.

Yes, I can see the one I have is not really designed to work upside down because as you say, they are lift pumps really. So I've gone with the Koralia pump as I can get a 900 l/h for £25 (ish) shipped from Charterhouse Aquatics; just ordered one.

Thank you all.

A typical power head can be run in almost any position. We often talk about them as if they should be right side up because it matches how we usually use them, not because it reflects a true need of the power head.
