Ok,

We have just got our 55gallon tank back online, and in upgrading and cleaning things out, we had to replace the powerheads <one was completely broken, and went out first, the other we replaced once we realized how inadequate it was since it was VERY OLD>

the First powerhead is a 402, and while it is nice and reversable, and really works well at pulling water thru the UGF, it spits the water out REALLY Forcefully. The poor fishies have to swim really hard to get upstream from it... <our Redfin shark LUVS to swim against it...> but the others seem less enthusiastic. It didn't come with any deflectors, or other gizmo's to help, and pointing it toward the front or back wall of the tank just seems to make that area unswimmable and pushes all taller plants around like crazy.

When we realized the second powerhead for the other side need replacing we got a Powerhead 301. this one is WAY less crazy.. different lfs, but same manufacturer, but it has a built in deflector that helps spread the force out and down.... causing minimal flow problems..... but it isn't enough to filter the tank by itself.

We had hoped that it wouldn't be a problem, but now i am really wondering.... I wish we could take the first powerhead back, but we tossed the box, reciept, etc... since we didn't even think we were going to need it, or even the second head...

I just don't want the gourami's and angels feeling like they are being battered by this thing.... :( Wish i could afford another powerhead, but it's doubtful... at least for now...

any creative ideas or suggestions?

 well you could place a plate of drilled perspex just in front of water outlet and it will dilute the current :D
Think this will work

ok, i'm game, but what is a plate of drilled perspex? and where would i find one? Sorry for the silly question, but i'm a "beginner" :fun:

I'm also thinking about putting a bit of fishtank tubing on it, and running it to the bottom, but that would just gouge out a hole in the gravel, and spit stuff everywhere... :dunno:
