I have set up a 29 gallon tank (30 inches long, 12 inches wide, 18 in ches high). Its freshwater and has two filters (30 gallon Topfin and 30 gallon AquaClear) running. It seems as if the water flow is not adequate enough. The filters are working fine and at the highest capacity, however, I can see that there are many dead spots within the tank.

Would a power head be necessary to create more of a current within the tank or would that just be detrimental to the fish??

I wouldnt of thought u needed one, seems like plenty of filteration and i think dead spots are good as it gives the fish places to rest at night.

The AC 30 should provide adequate filter flow by itself. The second filter just adds a bit of insurance in case the other one fails. It is not necessary to set up a whirlpool in your tank in order to have adequate circulation or filtration. Some areas with less flow in them are a good thing for the fish, to have a place to rest, as 5teady said. If you have fish that need very large currents, they will still appreciate a spot here and there where they can rest. For that type of fish a power head can create the impression of a rapid flowing creek, but that is seldom needed or desirable for our tropicals.
