Hi

I just bought a small potted plant today (some type of Java Fern). It came in a little aerated plastic pot. Do I leave it in the pot and bury the pot into the gravel or do I take it out of the pot?

If it's java fern then you need to attach it to something like a rock or ornament or wood or something. Fishing line/cotton works fine. Cotton rots though so if the java fern hasn't attached itself properly then it could float off if you use cotton.

Basically with java fern to roots need to stay exposed to the water, so definitely remove from pot.

Yup remove the pot, if the plant has a rhizome like java ferns do, make sure you don't bury the rhizome, just the roots.

I tie mine to the decor in my tanks. After a while it just looks like it belongs where it is. This is one I have tied to a bit of wood in a moderately small tank. It is on the left side and you can clearly see the wood piece it is tied to. It is a bit ratty looking because I have plant eating fish in that tank.

Thanks everyone. I do have a large piece of driftwod in the tank so I will remove it from the pot and try and attach it to that somehow. Perhaps a piece of fishing line will do the trick.

I always use some fishing line for mine but other people have been known to use some thread.

Posties have been known to use those infamous red elastic bands!
