It has occured to me lately that members of this forum do not always use the specifically titled forum for the post they are placing. I can see that the Mods move some posts to a more relevent section but not all. I can understand new members placing questions in the Welcome to the Fish Forums as they have not had chance to explore or may not understand the specific sections.

This is not a complaint, more of an observation really.

I, for instance, placed a post recently under Plants and Planted Tanks which takes in algae problems etc. and had just one member joining the thread. A similar post and at the same time as mine was listed under Tropical Discussions and attracted, to date, something like 5 posts from 5 individual members.
I realise this example doesn't constitute to market research but is just pointing out what sometimes does happen.

Now, when I visit these forums I check out the sections roughly in this order;

Buy sell and Swap
New to the Hobby
Tropical Discussions
Bettas
Hardware and DIY.

There is then usually no time left to visit any of the other sections before Mrs D suggests that my attentions have been diverted from her for long enough.

This leads me to think that the obvious section to place a question is in the Tropical Discussions to attract the widest audience.

Just interested in other members views on this matter. (this is a discussion post therefore is in the RIGHT section  )

But it's not a "tropical fish > tropical discussion" and therefore should be in "Board Announcements & Suggestions". :shifty:

Oh and 2000th post for me!

If eveyone gets the information they need then I don't really think it matters where it goes. I usually post in Tropical discussion as it's the most busy thread unless its very specific.

Point taken....it's a discussion at least

I move misplaced threads when I see them, but can't be here all the time.

If you want the greatest number of answers, perhaps you might get them by posting a specialized question in the Tropical Discussion forum. However, if you are looking for the correct answer to a question, it would probably be best to post in the right forum so the members who know the most about your particular subject will see it and respond.

wendywc is right. Your thread doesn't belong in Tropical Discussion so I'll move it over for you. ;)

It would also help if you brought the topic in question to the attention of a moderator. I'm rarely in marine or plant topics, and would surely overlook a misplaced topic in these areas. All the mods have their specialized areas of expertise, and will tend to gravitate towards those areas.

As Inchworm has said one answer from someone who is a specialist in that field is worth 10 answers from generalists who dabble in a bit of everything.

to add to inchworms post...

most of the time i visit tropical discussions to see any algae or plant threads which i can help out with, everytime i do, people are giving wrong information for example that algae causes nutrients etc

still better to post in right section, you also get more in depth answers.

I find members have started to post pictures in the tropical discussion, I would understand if these were questions to do with pictures but they are just showing them off..

Hey, still proved a point :p

Ok then, Cichlid stocking ideas in tropical discussion.....over 20 posts :/

Guess they all don't get moved.........as I said in my OP, not a complaint just an observation for discussion......Face...bothered? :D

Hi doresy :)

FYI, whether or not to move a thread is strictly a mod's call. When I see a thread (no matter what the title is) that could lead in many directions I'm usually inclined to leave it it Tropical Discussion. A stocking thread tends to be like that.

In the case you are referring to, the OP seemed open to suggestions and had not even decided if he/she wanted New World or African cichlids, so there is no other appropriate place for it.

As Mods we realize that we can't please all the people all the time. Some of the members are just chronic whiners. Of course, that's not a complaint, it's just an observation.

i agree with above points that most post in discussion cuz it gets the most replies. take gourami section for example.. or cyprinids, both get very few posts because there is very few people that ever reply. ive actually recommended people repost in a more popular section before knowing that they need advice asap and prolly wont get it there.
