Hello!
My name is Chelsie and this is my first post. I joined this forum in hopes to help my betta fish named Oswaldd. He is a blue male, about two years old, and has developed a grey lump on his bottom fin. He has had this lump come for a few days, go for a few weeks for a couple months now. The lump came back a couple days ago, but today I noticed a white dot, almost like a white head in the center. He is eating, swimming, pooping and acting normal. I just want to get the lump to go away before it gets too out of control, and before he became in pain from its existence. In the past I have given him melafix, but I can't tell if it is helping or not. I recently read about aquarium salt, would that help?
I have attached a picture:

Thank you for your time!

Does the lump feel hard to the touch, or soft and filled with fluid?
Just make sure the lump doesn't resemble a cauliflower.

I think I would use an internal bacteria medication.
Melafix more of an antiseptic treatment.

:hi:

I haven't touched it. He doesn't usually let me touch him. It is mostly grey, with that one white dot. I guess the grey part is a little lumpy like a cauliflower. What could that mean?
Not that it is a few days later he has around 3-5 smaller lumps down the bottom fin, but they are still his fin color of blue and not grey.
What name or brand of internal bacteria medication would you recommend? Where can I get it?
Thank you so much for your reply!

Which country do you live in please? Need to know to suggest a medication?

Lymphocystis

Symptoms:

Fish infected with Lymphocystis will present with clusters of whitish, berry-like growths on the skin and fins. These "clusters" may resemble small clutches of eggs or cauliflower (hence, it is sometimes called Cauliflower Disease). They will be clearly visible and may even become extremely large. This disease often affects the fins first.

Cause:

Viral infection. The virus will eventually kill the fish if it is unable to mount a strong enough immune response as the virus rampages through the fishs tissues, destroying its cells.

Treatment:

As with all viral infections, there is no suitable cure or efficacious treatment; however Quick Cure claims to be helpful. I have also heard of people who trim the fish's fins, followed by several baths in Malachite Green. Fortunately, this disease is uncommon and in some cases, infected fish are able to recover quickly without treatment.

Lymphocystis is highly infectious. When infected cells from the fishs skin or fins burst the virus is spread throughout the aquarium and can remain contagious for periods of up to two months. Fish not showing symptoms should be removed from the aquarium and placed in quarantine, away from other fish, for at least 60 days. Note, remove uninfected fish, not the other way around because the aquarium has become contaminated. The infected aquarium should be emptied and thoroughly disinfected before returning any fish to it. Do not use soap to clean the aquarium.

I live in the Unites States, in Oregon to be exact.
My fish lives alone, so it being contagious isn't really an issue.
How would I go about disinfecting his tank, like what sort of disinfectant do you recommend?
His bump is slowly getting bigger, and those little ones are still there. But it is just a white dot on the grey lump, and the other bumps are blue like his fins. For it to be the Cauliflower disease do they need to be all white?

I would maybe suggest using maracyn plus. But the medicaton will knock your good bacteria out in your filter.
As the lump on the fin could be bacterial.

Lymthocystis growths can be white, grey, red, I think brown.

Okay I will give that a try. Thank you for your help!

If any changes don't hesitate posting back on your thread.

Good Luck.

Hey chelsieb. I haven't been on here in a while (pregnant with #2 and sick all day, every day), but I happened to get on tonight and saw your post and my heart sank... That looks all too familiar to me! I'm going to refer you to a previous thread of mine, maybe it will help you a little bit. If you scroll down to my June 5th 2011 post in that thread and look at the pictures, I think you might see an advanced case of what you might be dealing with.
I don't know for sure what it was. All I know is my poor guy wound up losing his ability to swim, although he still ate like a silly little piggy and weirdly enough seemed to be fairly happy... but it was awful to watch him in the bad condition he was in.
I hope your guy is different, I hope it's just some weird growth, and I hope you are able to help him! He's a pretty guy! Good luck!

Oh no, that does look very similar. I hope the meds will help!
Thank you for referring me to your post.
I will keep you updated on his condition!

Did you manage to get hold of a med?

How is the betta?

It's slowly been getting worse.

I couldn't find the medicine at a pet or fish store near me so I ordered it online. It should be here any day now!

Is it possible to load another pic onto the site please!
Has the growth changed?

The meds have arrived. I cleaned his tank and administered the first dose yesterday. Here is a pic of his current condition:

It's bigger, and bumpier. And there's a reddish line along/inside the top. You can kinda see it in this picture.
Sorry if the picture is a little big. I took the pic with my phone and am not too tech savvy.

What the name of the medication you are using please?
How is the lump today. Has it got worse, or better?
