I was looking into getting into marine keeping and want ot eventually get into corals and such. I was thinking of eventually getting a 125 or something as the "main" tank. But I was thinking of something like this ( http://www.drsfostersmith.com/Product/Prod...mp;N=2004+62760 ) for my first tank. Is that a bit much for a tank like that with all the supplies? Also, is the other supplies any good, or are they a waste of time? Thanks for any help you guys give me!

Those redsea max cubes are decent, but actually not ideal for a quarantine tank if you're ultimately gonna have a 125 with bigger fish. If thats the long-term plan for the tank, I'd stick to something like a standard 30g or even a 30 long. You basically want a longer tank as opposed to a square one to allow any open-water fish you want in your 125 (tangs, angels, anthias, etc) some free swimming room ;). You'll also learn a little about hardware if you build a tank from the ground up, save a little money, and get your hands even more "wet" for when you're ready to move on to a larger tank :). Finding a fully setup 125 isn't easy, so you might as well learn :)

I was thinking the same, just wanted some input :D. I agree hands on is the best way to go, reading loads of threads and sites trying to find out which SW products are the best  . I guess that's what I get for being FW closed minded until now .

I really am highly interested in starting marine, it's just diciphering (sp) all fo the info and deciding what is best for me, or what's best in general. :good:

Edit: I was also told by someone els, that with the cost of that redsea max cube, i could get a 125 and start to get some of the supplies needed ot getehr to set that up? How true is this. I'm estimating probably $2,000 to $3,000 roughly from start to finish is this accurate?

$2000 - $3000 is a good ammount but make sure you have a lot of reservers as things can spiral upwards very quickly no matter how much you planned things. Also means you can buy better stuff

Yeah, you can get a 125, esepcially if you buy used for less than the cost of that red sea tank. $2k-3k is about right for total cost depending on how deep into reefkeeping you want to go

Well I figured $2-3 thousand for it. If I go slightly less expensive or get good deals on used/new items then it'll obviously cost me a bit less lol. But I figure if I save up and set that money aside... what do I have if I don't spend it all? Lots of spending money

Amen to that. Where in NY are you from? NYC/LI/NJ area, or somewhere's upstate?

Right now i'm kind of a nomad

Originally (2 years or so ago) I was from Orange County, NY. It's about 1 hr (without traffic) from NYC. My family decided ot move all the wy upstate near the canandian border, and I mean not the one by niagra either, the other one (straight up) lol. But at the very moment I'm at college in Cobleskill, NY (about 30-45 minutes from Albany, NY). I'll be back in OC in a week or so YAY!!! I get to see my old friends and family!!!

Ok, that aside... any particular reason you ask? Outside of shear curiosity that is ;)

Edit: Just looked at your thing, you're from Buffalo... Never been there, but its maybe 3 hrs or so depending on traffic from where I live way upstate!!!
Also, do you know of any good fish clubs (FW or SW) up in that area?

That's why I asked ;) ;).

CDMAS (Capital District Marine Aquarium Society) is near Albany and a pretty active club. Membership seems to be very local to albany and doesnt spread far beyond.

URSNY (Ubstate Reef Society of New York) is the club I'm involved with, we've got most of our membership in Buffalo and Rochester, but extend out towards Syracuse, Albany, Finger Lakes, and even Binghampton and Erie PA.

Kind of two different entities. CDMAS is a formal club through and through, URS is a very loose-knit group with a formal group within (URSNY) which we hope will help bring more events/speakers to the area like what we've got planned at the seneca park zoo on the 31st of march.

Thats kind of a really quick rundown of the upstate clubs. There are ones for the NYC area I'm sure, but I dont know what they are.

Oh, Awsome then! :hyper: I've been wndering where they are lol. I've been hearing everyone say, "oh go get involved in a club" and all that, and I'm thinking "do I really live that far out into the boonies that fish clubs aren't around .

Thanks for the heads up on that :good:

The only good OC is in California :sly: Nothing beats OUR OC.

I don't doubt that in any way
