Well I have come up with a rough stocking list for my 180 litre/ 47 gallon tank. None of it is definite and would welcome suggestions or comments etc!

I do like Angel fish but know that can be a bit feisty, so is it OK to keep just one? If it is, the stock list goes something like this;

1 angel fish
6-8 Harlequin Rasboras
4 Dwarf Gourami
1 red tailed shark
4 cory cats
3 dalmation mollies
4 platys

This is just the initial list, I basically like pretty fish, with colour and I also like shoals, hence the rasboras. if the above wont work for whatever reason what are the alternatives? I quite like rainbow fish, but do they like soft water, if so they are out as the ph is about 7.5-8 and we live in quite a hard water area.

I have a 60 litre/15 gallon tank as well where the platys are currently living. I was thinking of moving them into the new tank, and sticking a shoal of neon tetras into this as I dont think I can have neons with angel fish, have read they will get eaten! How many neons would go into a 60 litre, should I put anything else in with them?

As i said, this is only a first attempt at a stocking list, so please comment away!!

Angelfish are not that bad its just when people try and mix too many fish with them but if you are prepared and plan your stock around this issue its not a problem. The fish combo looks okay a few issues especially in numbers of the Dwarf Gourami - they are also hit and miss as to if they work well with angel fish as well so I would perhaps consider choosing either or - a good alternative to dwarf gourami in terms of colour and peaceful balance is the thick lipped orange gourami. The other issue you could have is with the live bearers I would just stick to male platies, in a tank that size you would be able to handle an amount of fry but you are just going to get over run in the long term and male platies go fine where as male mollies are sometimes problematic if you were just going for mollies for the dalmation colour morph you can get dalmation platies as well now or they are also sometimes called calico platies but yeah

I would perhaps do a stocking like this

2 Angel Fish
10 Harlequin Rasboras
2 Orange Thick Lipped Gourami
7 Male Platies - your choice of colours it makes no difference to the behaviour or success of the tank just depends on how you want the tank to look :)
1 Rainbow Shark - more peaceful than the red tail, rainbows have all red fins not just tail
8 Cory Cats - all one species not a mix of different ones so eg if you want bronze get 8 bronze not 2 peppered, 2 panda etc etc
