Does it matter where in the tank that you position your heater?

I bought one yesterday and you have to keep the top part out of the water. On some of the pictures i have seen here the heater is usually diagonal across the back wall.

But with this i will have to keep upright.

I have a 20g tank and a 150w heater.

put the heater next to the filter outlet so the warm water gets circulated round the tank

Mine is a hang-on heater and it works fine. :) Don't submerge it if it's supposed to be on the side.

Wish i could do that, but the bloody power cable is so short it wont reach, i can see an essential purchase coming in the form of a replacement heater lol

As long as you have decent circulation you can put a submersable most anywhere in the tank. Many of mine are just tossed in. Many of mine also have extension cords.

true true!!!!!!!!!!!!! the only real reason to mess with heater position , is efficiency, as in, keeping the freshly heated water away from the thermostat!!!

i keep mine on the side in a just off vertical position, but in my tank they move around themselves, lol.
well actually its my Cary, she moves everything except the biggest decoration items, no a nightly basis. that is also why they are still stuck to the side of the tank.

I dont think it matters too much where you position your heater. On my tank i have it vertically hanging through a slot in the top part of my filter box. Alternatively you can use suction pads to hold it against the side wall of your tank.

People sometimes put the heater diagonally to even out the temp of the whole tank but if your tank isn't too big, it wont make much difference. just put a thermometre on the opposite side of the tank to the heater.
