Hi folks,

I recently noticed my german blue ram has pop-eye. So I took him out of the main tank and into a small hospital tank and have been treating him with melafix and water changes but, it doesn't seem to be clearing it up.

None of the other fish have been infected so I am wondering if he damaged himself some how and thats how he got it. The water parameters on the main tank are good.

Anyway, has anyone any ideas how to help him. Will his eyes go back down or is he scarred like that for life? I thought maybe aquarium salts?

cheers chish

ANy ideas.... I heard it wont kill him but he could go blind.

Hi ~Chish - how's the ram doing today? I've always found that Myxazin helps clears up pop eye very quickly. Are you able to get some of that? If it's treated promptly and correctly, yes, pop eye will disappear.

Normally this sort of thing occurs when the fish has been under a lot of stress, so it might be worthwhile looking into what caused it so that you can prevent it happening again.

As you know, GBRs are quite sensitive little fish, so if their tank environment is not exactly right then they will become stressed and eventually show signs of illness (usually bacterial to begin with).

So let's start with your tank set-up - size of tank, tank inhabitants, type of food fed, and if you have a water testing kit it's a good idea to test your water and let us have a look at the results to ensure nothing there is causing upset to your ram. How long have you had it?

Did you notice your ram losing it's bright colouration and going a darker shade (almost charcoalish colouration)? Any clamped fins?

The more info you supply, the easier it will be to help.

Regards, Athena

A home remedy that always works for me is to add 1 tbsp of epsom salts for every 5 gallons in your tank plus a 50% water chang monitor it and if results dont show quarintine it

Hi there thanks for the replies. I havent had internet connection for a bit so jumped on today. The tank is at my girlfriends house. Am afraid the ram died the other day, gutted, I thought he might get better.

We tested the water with my kit and all the parameters are fine amonia is 0 and so is nitrite, dont have a nitrate one mind you but the tank waste is minimal and I have real plants in there too to help with that.

its a 100 litre tank, inhabitants are: 5 rummy noses, 5 black skirt/widow tetras, 5 peppered corries, and now only 1 ram  so there shouldn't be alot of waste, I also have 2 internal filters running on it. Plants are really healthy too. I do water changes every week alternatively at 25% and 50%.

hope that helps.

I did notice his colours go dark and he hid away a lot amongst the plants. The female has been out and about though. And for a while they were breeding. I dont know if it was stress or what. I know they can be quite delicate for water conditions but so can rummy noses and they seem ok.

If I can I want to add more rummies and a BN plec.
