I bought 3 corydora trilineatus yesterday and at first they all seemed healthy bar a rip in one of their dorsal fins. But I've just come home to find one of them lying on his/her side at the bottom of the tank. He/she was still breathing so I netted him to have a closer look and on one side in the middle of his body there is like a pale brown stain

I've placed him in a breeder net to be able to monitor him better and I've added a few sinking pellets but he's not bothered about them :(

Can anybody tell me what's wrong? I don't want to lose him/her already when everything was going well in my tank :(

Tank details:
48 litres
Interpet PF1 filter
40% water change yesterday with interpet tapsafe
Been set up 4 months
Cycled for around 2 of those

Ammonia = 0
NitrITE = 0
NitrATE = 40 (comes out of the tap at 20)

Tests done with the API freshwater master test kit.

Brown patches can be a number of thing from velvet to columnaris.
If he laying to onside it could be bacterial.

Any red streaking in fins or body. Or red sores.
Any signs of flicking and rubbing.
Hows the fish breathing.

Thank you for your speedy reply :)

No red sores of stripes.
No sign of flicking
He's breathing very rapidly and gasping with his mouth.

Another fish just nudged him from under the net and he didn't seem to swim right, kind of wiggling more than normal and he fell back down to the bottom pretty quickly.

Not sounding to good.
Anti internal bacteria med by interpet. Can you issolate him.

The third type of infection produced by Aeromonas is by no means the least. This form is often the most virulent (potent) and can be rapidly fatal. This insidious form does not produce any noticeable external ulcers. The most notable feature is a behavioral change in which the infected fish generally become listless and lethargic. Some fish may lose color or appear darker. The fish do not feed, frequently seem off balance and may sink to the bottom laying on their sides. The course of the disease is rapid, and by the time the behavioral changes are noticed, the entire population of a tank may succumb, sometimes in a day or so. This is an internal infection, with the bacteria being found in the kidneys and blood of these fish. The bacteria produce potent toxins that account for the severity of the disease.

I'm afraid I can't isolate him as I don't have a spare tank :(

Will it do the other fish more harm than good if I treat the whole tank with this med?

Its not wise to medicate a whole tank with once just sick fish.
But this time I would medicate the whole tank and invest in an issolation tank.

If I buy another tank my dad will kill me, but I'll sacrifice my own life for my fishies :)

I don't mean to sound stupid (so please don't berate me for it!) but would it be better to put him into any kind of large, clean container that I can find? Or can't you medicate without a filter?

I'm going to my lfs as soon as I have transport :)

When you issolate a fish you need a heater and filter.
You need extra aeration with med. Meds reduce 02 in the water.

Its not sounding to hopeful I'm afraid. He might be to far gone to save. But it always worth a try.

Ok, thank you for all your help :) I'll make sure to keep my venturi on tonight to help oxygenate the water :)

I'll post to say how the med goes and if he survives the night, or even the evening, I'm crossing all my fingers and toes! It makes it quite hard to type though!

Good Luck.
Corys are very prone to bacterial infection.

I bought the med, got home and he was still breathing, mixed up the right dosage and then he died! :(

Should I still treat the rest of the tank? Nobody else is showing symptoms. What are the early symptoms of this that I should look out for?

Bless him R.I.P.

If the med was mixed it up to you of you add it.

Signs of a bacterial infection are.
The fish will look pale or darker in colour.
Acting listless and lethagic.
Leaning to oneside, or resting on plants.

R.I.P :(

Really, genuinely, thank you for all your help I would have panicked so much without your advice! :)

I'll be watching the tank like a hawk over the next few days to make sure everyone else is fine! :)

Bless Him. R.I.P.
Just do a few water changes on the main tank.
Good Luck.
