Yeah I tried sand for awhile, but it does do a number on filters. I still have sand in my 55, but switched back to gravel in my 100,40, and 10. If you have high waste producing fish, imo, it's just too hard to find the balance of water flow and not kicking it up into your filters. I liked the way it looked, but honestly, my cichlids seem to have better colors over the black gravel than the sand.
In my reef 40, my corals are happier and I can monitor the health of my cuc more closely with the crushed coral and black gravel mix. Since I am going with the lots of flow and thru live rock for most of my bio-filter, sand just didn't work. I also notice that my nitrates are more slow to climb now, which is counter-intuitive, I know..but that's the truth.
All just more info to process. I used the playsand though, so I can not speak for the expensive stuff.
