The article in the link has a few pics of my tanks with that sand. Most shops should be able to special order it for you. It comes in five pound bags that run $4-5. There are six bags in a case.

Ahh you quoted the price in dollars. You are stateside I guess ? Im in the UK so will have to find a supplier here Thanks.

I've walked around the local LFS shops and I don't have too much choice of what sand to get. Also I am running out of budget
This Estes stuff does not exist around here and there are no online shops that deliver in this area.
So my question is, did someone have brown diatoms outbreaks when using Play sand(as it is supposedly high on silicates) and will it fly around easily and damage the filter(plan is 10 corydoras at least digging around and a few kuhli loaches)?

Others' experience may differ since I've used kiln-dried sand from B&Q in my tanks, not specifically play sand, but it is a cheap, fine sand. I never had any problems with diatoms or algae when replacing gravel in my mature tanks, and once it is cleaned it doesn't fly around at all, and I have six cories and a bristlenose plec. Never had any problems with it clogging up filters either, not even after an over-enthusiastic water change that left a cory sitting there with a little pile of sand on his head

You may just have to ask at the LFS. They can't carry everything, but should be happy to special order anything they can get in for you.

Yes, I have heard of people who have used cheapo sands have huge problems with brown algae as soon as they put it in. It 'coincidentally' stopped as soon as they took it back out.

I went to all possible places where pool filter sand or any other aquarium safe sand could be sold and they told me they are out of it and to come back in the summer
The good part is that I walked in one of the LFS and they had new stock. Got some whitish sand, which is naturally mixed with a tiny amount of black grains, but the sand itself is coarser and actually does look better than the play sand in Argos.
It was quite heavy to carry 50 kilos around, but at least my wallet was feeling lighter

Yeah I tried sand for awhile, but it does do a number on filters. I still have sand in my 55, but switched back to gravel in my 100,40, and 10. If you have high waste producing fish, imo, it's just too hard to find the balance of water flow and not kicking it up into your filters. I liked the way it looked, but honestly, my cichlids seem to have better colors over the black gravel than the sand.


In my reef 40, my corals are happier and I can monitor the health of my cuc more closely with the crushed coral and black gravel mix. Since I am going with the lots of flow and thru live rock for most of my bio-filter, sand just didn't work. I also notice that my nitrates are more slow to climb now, which is counter-intuitive, I know..but that's the truth.


All just more info to process. I used the playsand though, so I can not speak for the expensive stuff.

It's really up to yourlikes and your fishes on what sand to use. Pool filter sand is a little coarser than play sand. I have playsand in 8 tanks and it works wonderfully!
