So I've recently done a bit of a test on my external filter which is attached to my Juwel Rio 400. It's an Aquael Unimax 700 rated at 1700LPH. I've figured out that it's only really pushing around 850LPH even after being cleaned.

I'm thinking of switching over to live plants and even with my current light tank stocking I dont think it's going to do the job when it gets a lot of plant bits sucked into it and the design of the filter means I can't even begin to imagine the hell that cleaning it out every week would be.

What I'd like to know is if a pond filter can be used on an aquarium like this and whether or not it would do a better job than my current filter will. Also, are pond filters inherently any noisier than regular external filters? :good:

well depends. i assume you would use a pressurised system rather than gravity return, in which case the noise show come from pump and the level noise obviously depends on what spec pump your using. If you wanted flow of 1700 then the pump shouldn't be too large i would just go for a 2000 litre system as most manufacturers do whole numbers. I would go for some sort of OASE system, if not the whole thing then the pump should be as i think they would be the quietest. But you could get away using some sort of hozelock system.

I have 3 filters that I use in my summer tub, sort of a pond. They are designed to be used easily with my fountain pump. What I do in winter, when it gets too cold to keep fish outdoors, is bring the filters into the house and use each one with a power head to filter larger tanks. When summer comes again, the filters are fully cycled and ready to go back into my summer tub. In my case my pond filters are sponge type and are designed to be used in groups attached to the fountain pump for flow.

You could just add another filter, possibly the same one. If you need extra turnover for a planted tank, what about a powerhead as well?

Most pond filters i've seen don't have a pump like external filters, so you'd need a huge pump inside the tank too.

not necessarily you could run an inline pump such as an aquamax dry. This would sit outside the tank.
