I have been making plans for a betta tank for a while now.  My intent is to gift it to my dad, which he has agreed to doing (so no unwanted fish-gift).  I asked him what kind of betta he'd like, and he told me to choose one for him.  Yay!!
After following threads of other folks getting a new betta, my time has finally FINALLY come to get one.

So, what kind and why?  I saw something about plakat bettas.  What are they?  Thanks folks! :)  I'll be making a journal/chronicle once I get the tank.

P.S. I recieved the tank, shipped from Petco cause it was on sale, a few days ago.  Here's a link to the tank on Amazon.  The acryllic lid was cracked, and the filter was missing a piece so that the two intake pieces wouldn't attach.  I've returned it and am looking for one in a Petco store.  I don't like Petco much, but I like this tank cause of its footprint for a small volume (6.6 gallons).

I voted Plakats.
They are basically shortfin bettas. Because of the lack of extremely long fins, they are much more active and lively than the other bettas. :) :fish:
When you get one be sure to post pics!

I also voted a plakat - I have a veiltail, love him, but he does occasionally nip his tail. I will probably head for a plakat next time though :)

I voted VT because they are easy to care for and quite flashy, I would have also said PLKT they are also very hardy fish. Personally I would steer clear of CT and DT bettas as they require more in the way of care.
Man there all great fish, good luck and have fun.

Wow, choosing the fish for him, what a joy...

I voted for Plakat, but if I was to have a second choice it would be a Crowntail.  I have a VT, CT's, Half-Moon and Plakats.  Of all my boys the Plakats are the most active, on the go almost all the time.  Those with the flowing fins can have issues with fin trouble as well as getting tired carrying their fins around.  I have generally however, found CT's more active than the VT's.

In respect to what is a Plakat, it is a Betta with a short tail, much like those in the wild.  However, do not be put off as you can now get some stunning looking Plakats.  My latest boy is turning out to be one such stunner and is very feisty too.  In that same topic you will also find images of my other Plakat.

Further images of Bettas can be found here, Betta Resistance is Futile, not forgetting the girls who can be equally as stunning.

I've been looking at tank mates for the betta, and my LFS has got some nerite snails.  Since the tank is newly established, it obviously doesn't have algae in it for the snails to chomp on.  What should I feed the snails?  I heard algae wafers will work, but I am afraid the betta will nom it.  Bettas shouldn't eat vegtable matter, is that correct?

As for my choice of betta, I'm looking at what my LFS has to offer, which is pretty much everything.  I haven't gotten a close look at them yet, since I won't be buying him/her for probably another week (seeding filter media and gone for vacation).  So when I'm back, I'm thinking of finding a blue/white plakat.

Thanks for all the votes folks!
