Plec Suddenly A Recluse

At least you dont have to worry too much about him now  awe bless little fry, good luck with them :good:

Thats good to know I was right ;) and when they grow a little you can either keep a few or sell some on (on here/LFS). Well good luck to you and your BN fry :good: Would love to see pictures if you got any.

Oh crap, it's fry! Guess I better start reading up on how to take care of them. . . yikes!

At least you know he's not stuck :p there pretty easy to care for as when you start to spot them they will eat pretty much what the adults eat, you will probably need to blanch any veg if you don't already :good:

Just found some good reading on raising them and it doesn't sound terribly tricky. I guess a big thing to see will be how many actually hatch. I have only seen one in there with him so far, but he is still sitting there fanning, so maybe it was just an early one to hatch. The way he is lying, I can't really see anything behind him because of how far he is holed up in there, so I have no idea whats behind him.

This is all pretty funny, because last week I commented to my wife that our female was looking awfully chubby lately - much moreso than usually. I guess she was full of eggs. Hopefully I'll be able to see some more hatch over the next few days. This would be their first spawn, and they are still pretty young. I'm guessing not much older than 2 or so. I've had some of my Corys try to spawn, but the female never laid a lot of eggs, just slapped a few on the glass here and there. She has since died, sadly. Not sure if she was old or what, but she never seemed to get any smaller after plumping up quite a bit, and the males I'm pretty sure are all too immature still. They were WAY smaller than her and pestered her to no end.

I haven't been doing anything special to get anyone to breed, so I can't really complain. Hopefully some of these babies hatch!

good luck! having fry makes u feel like ur doing something right! and its great seeing them grow, my first fry are now almost as big as their adult counterparts and its really cool knowing they were born and raised in my care :D

Still haven't gotten a clear view behind him to see if a bunch hatched. Any I found a dead Panda Cory this morning :-( They seem to be fragile little guys. I've had two die now over the course of 4 months or so, both unexpected (no signs of illness). I did notice that both of them looked a bit oddly shaped though, like they were slightly deformed. Water parameters are fine and everyone else seems to be healthy, so who knows!

STILL haven't gotten a glimpse. He's been in there for 6 days and won't come out! I still can't see any signs of babies either. Ughhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

6 days should have another 3-4 days before any start appearing, its usually 3 days to hatch then a further 7 days before dad lets them go, when they will have there adult colouring

But is it normal for them to be in there and me not be able to see them at all? Also his eye looks funny -- like the pupil is whitish. Hard to say. I guess if he stays in there another week Ill start to worry.

When they have fry they will like to hide themslves away, so no one (that includes other fish) can see them. If other fish don't know theres fry around then they won't try to eat them. As for his eye, that might just be because he's in a dark place, could be your torch or another reason, try and have a look at him when he comes out just to make sure he is in an ok condition. Give it another 4 days like lilfishie said. I reckon he will be ok.

Alright, he has been blocking the entrance to the cave a bit less so I've been able to see in there. I've counted at least 8-10 fry, some regular, some albino even which is kind of exciting (saw the first albinos today). I've actually seen three come out of the root now, and when doing a water change today, I saw one scamper and it ended up on the side of the glass so I could see it closely. It was an albino too. Pretty neat stuff, I must say. Now that I know they are around, I'm going to boil some frozen zucchini, and I've also heard that french cut green beans with no salt are good. There is a lot of space in the root, so I think I may put the veggie in there and let them find it inside there so they will be a bit safer.

Looking at my current stock (in sig), do you think anyone will be inclined to dine on them? The only ones I'd really think might go after them would be the Danios as they are little garbage cans and eat everything. I'm also averse to trying to feed the babies (on purpose) with the wafers because the whole tank comes running when I drop them in. Today I had my female plec, about 6 catfish, all 3 honeys, the Danios, and the Betta all down there attacking it periodically, and then of course the MTS roll in and clean up all the scraps while they're eating.

Anything I should particularly do or not do to raise them? I shortened up my filter inlet so it is higher in the tank to try to keep from sucking them in, and I'll start doing water changes probably every 4 days or so now to keep it clean. Should I put at least some veggies in there every day? I read that the biggest reason people lose plec fry is starving them, so I want to keep them decently fed. Is small veggies once a day enough?

Well, I saw this thread and I was just going to remind you that June is Plec hiding month but your thread has turned out to be a good read. Good luck Ryno, I have no idea how to raise that sort of fry! We'll all be wanting to see a picture now.

I normally use cucumber with a weight through the middle, plecs love it and the fry will always have a consent source of food. Saying that zuccini is the same, just make sure you change it every day to stop the water going a lovely murky green colour. I don't know if boiling it would help or anything, I just rinse mine under the tap to clean it then drop it in. As for the french cut green beans with no salt, I have no idea  never heard that before, you could always give it ago and see if it works.

Putting the food in the root would be a good idea, like you said it will stop your other fish from eating it. But saying that your male should guard it from all the other fish. The only other thing your could do is distract the fish. Put another bit of zucchini at the other end of the tank for your other fish to eat. That way they get distracted and your fry have their own food.

I would let nature take its course for raising them, if your plecs decide to breed again they will know what to do next time. Don't be surprised if you do lose the odd 1 or 2 fry, fish have large numbers of fry because they expect some to be lost. But keeping the tank clean won't harm them, just try not to over clean it. ;) Hope that helps you and would love to see pictures of the fry. :good:
