To set the record straight, I'm of the belief that the majority of people who buy these fish are not aware of their origins, especially the dying factor. Its not good that people don't research the fish they buy, but it is a fact that alot don't. People rely on info from the LFS, who are partly to blame.
I got mine with the tank that my Dad gave me. He kept freshwater fish for 7 years and the parrots came with the tank when he bought it second hand. When he gave me them he told me I could buy purple ones and blue ones too - he'd seen them in the lfs, and I was excited to buy some, until I did my research and realised what they were.
I don't appreciate being bashed for keeping them, whats the alternative? they are live animals, you can't just flush them because human beings decided to breed them. I didn't buy them at the end of the day. Once you own these fish, thats it... you've got them, and nothing you can do is going to stop people breeding them. Finding out AFTERWARDS is too late... its not fair to say they are rubbish fish and you're glad I got rid of them, thats like saying they have no right to live. Once they are living, they have a right to life. End of.
In my opinion, it is the LFS's fault for not telling people what they're buying. That is basically the bottom line.
