I posted a problem I had previously with Guppies in my thank. Basically they were turning white and dieing. I received various advice all of which I followed. I still seem to be having a problem. I took a dead one to the aquarium center and some water. They said that the fish looked like it had a bacterial infection and dropsy. My water was tested and no problems found. They advised to leave a week to make sure no more fish died, which I did. Last week I purchased some more fish and added to the tank. I also did a water change at the same time. I purchased 9 females. So I had 12 guppies, now 5 have died. Tested water again no problems. There are no markings on the guppies. Before they die they swim upside down, they start to drop to the bottom then pull themselves up but eventaully they drop to the bottom stay stay there and die. There are no visible signs of disease. My other fish (10 neon tetras, 2 clown loach & pleckie all fine and not dieing). What is wrong? My tank set up is = 96 Litres, I use ROwater, sand substrate, live plants. Plants growing well, water tested thoroughly and fine. The only 2 things that spring to mind is that I have a male guppy (added as first batch) that seems aggressive & it seems that the problems occur when I change the RO water. Can anyone help? Sorry about the long post

Your tanks overstocked.
What test kit are you using.
Can you post water stats please.

Ammonia = 0
Nitrite = 0
Nitrate = 40
PH = 7.59

I am using the API testing kit (where you put drops of the solution in a test tube with the tank water in it)

Ok.
The signs they are showing can be bad water quality, ph shock, bacterial.
No signs of flicking and rubbing.
Do any fish look skinny or bloated.
What does it look like when the fish go to the toilet.

The fish do not look skinny or bloated. I do have a couple of pregnant ones. They do not seem to be showing any signs of distress, rubbing or flicking. On the poo stakes they swim around with the poo hanging out of their bottom till it drops off. The aquatics center seemed to think the waste cycle was as good as it could be. I did have a bacterial infection a whille ago which I treated. This current batch of guppies are not displaying those symptoms I had before. On the PH front when I tested it the Normal PH was 7.6 & HPH was 8.4. The 7.59 was given to me by the aquatics center.

Thanks for your help by the way

What bacterial med did you use and how long.

I used INTERPET Anti Internal Bacteria Fish Help Treatment No9. However the current batch are not dieing with the same symptoms that I bought this treatment for. If it makes any difference I can say that I have noticed the following.

1. The first batch that I bought (from a differnt aquatic shop) seemed to have survived through this whole process.
2. All the guppies seem to like to congregate at the top of the tank occasionaly swimmiing around the tank whilst the other fish swim around.
3. Before they die they go off into one corner of the tank and stay at the top.
4. I have three babies from the original batch that swim happily around the whole tank and seem to be growing nicely.
5. I am losing guppies but not one of the Neons have died

I had another one that was dead this morning. When I took it out of the tank there was not any markings of disease.

I would use the bacterial med again.

The third type of infection produced by Aeromonas is by no means the least. This form is often the most virulent (potent) and can be rapidly fatal. This insidious form does not produce any noticeable external ulcers. The most notable feature is a behavioral change in which the infected fish generally become listless and lethargic. Some fish may lose color or appear darker. The fish do not feed, frequently seem off balance and may sink to the bottom laying on their sides. The course of the disease is rapid, and by the time the behavioral changes are noticed, the entire population of a tank may succumb, sometimes in a day or so. This is an internal infection, with the bacteria being found in the kidneys and blood of these fish. The bacteria produce potent toxins that account for the severity of the disease.

We had this, the rest of the fish were fine, just the guppies, we did a part water change every few days and after a few weeks, it all stopped...all fish happy and doing fine (so far)

Bacteria infections can flare back up if the bacteria wasn't destroyed.
Anti internal bacteria med only really any good on mild bacteria infections.

Never had any luck with guppys so stopped keeping them.
If you really want to keep them I would try and find a good breeder of them.

What I find confusing is that the original batch are all ok, just the 2 new batches subsequently purchased. Is it a basic error to add new fish when changing water? Wilder as you suggest I will treat again to see if it works. If not then I do as you have done and not keep Guppies.

You can get bad batches of fish.
Always check where the lfs got them from. As some are taken from the wild.

To be fair my first batch was purchased from a different stockist than the last 2.

Sorry meant to add that the second stockist has a high reputation and came highly recommended

I was told years back that if you really want to keep guppys find a good supplier that breeds them.
