I've set up my Juwel Vision 180 today, and i put some media out my current tank in there to start the cycle going.

My dads been keeping fish in his pond for years now (longer than i've been alive, and im 18 on Thursday :- ) and he suggested putting 4 small goldfish (ones which have 'appeared' due too the wonderfull world of breeding many moons ago) into the tank, as they cr@p alot and would help the cycle. Im away from home at the moment with work, and he did say that if he saw any stress he'd move them back.

Simple question this time guys...good move or bad move?

p.s. just before i left they looked to be having an amazing time in their temporary home :p

The problem i have is that im away during the week for the next 4 weeks, and was hoping to get the cycle done during this time. My partents and little sister (whos in charge of feeding the other tank :p) wouldn't be able to test the water and add the ammonia as necessary, so wanted some way of getting ammonia in the tank without having to do that.

If theres another way then let me know :)

putting the media from the other tank into the filter wouldve been enough to get it started for you, id take the fish out

but then how would i provide a constant supply of ammonia in order to let the bacteria survive?

I dont particularly want to add my stock yet as i'd want to be at home during the week in order to spot any problems.

if your dad has been keeping fish for years surely he would know how to do a fishless cycle? If he didnt know he would figure it out as its so easy! Thats coming from someone who has only had fish for a year

He keeps outdoor fish in a pond...and as far as im aware he's never cycled a pont :S

Only one fish required if you want to keep any fish in the 180.

Best of luck with it! :)

yeah putting 4 in was probably a bit excessive, i'll get him to remove some, and just keep the one in there until my stock is ready.

Cheers guys.

The Matured media has been added, so the Goldfish will be fine, regardless, Goldfish are pretty hardy fish. Personally I've done fishless cycles and fish cycles, and I find the result to be the exact same in the long run.

how do you cycle a pond then?

fishless cycling is easy and more humane. please try and do it this way, if not now in the future

some people can be so rude, there's just no need for it..

if you have added seeded media and the fish are small then what's the problem?? if he comes back after a week and his stats are fine are you still going have a problem???

if you get your dad to test your stats in a week (or less) and they are fine then job done m8 :good: , you will be able to relax for the weeks your away and enjoy stocking it when you get back, if the stats are a little of ask your dad to do a water change and take a couple of fish out..

now lets be friendly guys and give him some advice NOT rudeness.
