I’ve been getting a lot of mixed answers and just need some clarification. How many platys can be in a 10 gallon tank without overstocking?

One, long-term, though I would not recommend this. A 20 gallon is considered minimum for a small group of platies.

Water quality (maintenance, feeding, plants) can all factor in obviously, but the fish still need space to interact naturally.

In my opinion, if the tank is 2 foot long and you have good filtration and do regular water changes & gravel cleaning, you can have 4-5 platies in the tank. However, any baby platies will need to be moved out as they grow, and it would give the fish more space if they have a bigger tank. :)
