Hi i have a platy who has taken a real dislike to the traps and nets, so much that she wont give birth properly in them she seems to hold onto them and also passes some unfertilized eggs, so i took action i set up my smaller tank useing a old filter what i still have running in another tank and she is happily giving birth to her fry now ive seen two in a matter minutes been born its taken her hours to let 5 or 6 out in the hactchery

Well she has been in the tank for around 20 minutes now and she is giving birth like a trooper, between every birth she has a mad swim around up and down and all over the tank then goes upto the filter and drops another one

Lots of fish hate breeding traps... I won't use one. I use a cheap plastic vegetable steamer. It's a sturdy plastic container with a colander that sits inside. I fill it with water and put the fish in there, and when she gives birth the fry fall through the holes. I've never had a fish panic inside it.

i been thinking of the breeding tank for a while now but i never got round to it. had platties for a few months now and got 3 f 1 m but dont seem to be poducing a lot of fry, 6 on the last drop, i dont have the heart to put them in a breeding tank, theyre tiny!

on reading of this recent news however im gonna try the breeding tank right now.

what did you put in there stiffler?

congrats by the way

You basically would want plant's, adn things to gide under/behind, adn also where they can acess food easily.

Hi i leave my breeding tank basic however i do use large pebbles for the bottom this way you see the fry head straight to the bottom and go underneath the pebbles the mother platy cant get in there as shes too big, i didnt loose one last night to her and ive woke up today to see them all above gravel level and swimming happily, im really happy with the progress of them and she had around 30, i feel she was holding onto them that tightly in the trap she may of died

so im thinking 3 or 4 bir rocks, one or two plants and i should be ok,

gravel or not?

thanks

Use small pebbles instead of rocks; or big gravel.

I use that filter media made of small ceramic hollow pieces in some of my tanks, works very well.
