hi,

do male and females have different shaped tails?

the reason i am asking is i have 2 baby platys whose tails are no wider than their body, whereas the rest all have a fan shaped tail.

thanks.

The tales are the same on all platys, the difference is in the anal fin: females have a rounded one, males have a pointy, "clamped" looking one.

Their are no difference's in tails shape as stated only the anal fin once the fish are mature.

Tail shape is not a way to judge a platy's gender. Please read through the article at the top of this section for clues on telling the sexes apart for livebearers. A platy is a common poeciliid and follows the poeciliid pattern for sexing. I also have a link to that thread in my signature the link is called sexing livebearers.

When you say the tails are not fan shaped, are they clamped like the "Weird tail" in this picture;

?
If so that is not a good sign and the fry are sick.
