She looks pregnant, I keep mollies though so I would not know for sure. :good:

Looks it to me but when mine was this fat she still had 2 weeks left until she actually had fry so i would let her out until she starts acting strange / not feeding alot or you can see the little birthing tube become hollow by her bum lol are you plannIng to raise the fry then ? :)

Thanks for replying, actually yeah i plan to raise them, i bought 3 males, and 5 females, i have a 25 gallon aquarium, and also a 5 gallon......i also got myself a fish hatchery, if all females get pregnant every month, that makes a lot of babies, i would keep some, and plan to sell the others to my local pet shop store ... makes some cash too :D

:) thry sure do churn out alot of babies it wasnt my plan to breed my platys but they came to me pregnant from the store and i didnt have the heart not to save them and make my small tank a nuesury its now home to 1 2 month old and 20 one week old fry i could spend hours at the tank just watching them lol (sad i know :S)

i also think i got it pregnant from the store too, but the thing is, let's say she needs 2 more weeks to give birth, while knowing it aint for sure ! does it matter if i keep her in the hatchery for that time ??? i don't wanna be cruel towards her, but neither getting back home or waking up, as the babies would literally be sucked by the filter and/or eaten by the others...

Im not sure tbh as i have always left my platy to have fry in main tank and captured babies afterwards have you got many plants for them to hide in in the tank ? I have moss and they all love to hide out in that , hopefully someone with more experience of breeding boxes can advise you if keeping her in there for that long would be stressful ?

I have read on here not to keep them in the hatchery for more than 24 hrs as the confined space can really stress them out. There is a great thread in the pinned topics on patties with really detailed pictures this might help to determin how close she is.

Your platy is not that far on if you take away that over fed belly, your feeding her a little to much, lay off the feeding for a few days, just feed twice a day, small amounts, morning and then night, she will return the natural size she should be without the dropped down belly at the front.

have a look at this pic i have done (more info can be found in the link in my signature.)

"Your fish is the red line"

Black line - Her normal size how she should be.

Red line - Over fed (belly dropped too much at front)...

White line - How she will look when heavy pregnant.

i got a small breeding net and put it over the filter to stop them being sucked up.
if you do that about a week before you think she'll give birth, then just before she gives birth trap her you should be pretty safe. if you have some hiding places you might be fine without trapping her.
but you'll have to make sure you do regular water changes because the net stops the filter working as well.
i've heard you can also get sponges to do the job.

as u said 5teady_2012....2 days later now, her belly dropped a little bit, i think she was constipated, coz she has been making a lot of poo lately....wish helped her to go back to her normal belly size), but it's still pretty much round !

What I would do mate is once she looks like she is at her natural size. Re post a picture of her and il give you a better determination on how far on she is :)

i have a question on this subject. How do you know when she is about to have her fry? Mine like to hide and stay at the bottom of the tank she hasn't ate in weeks well not has much has she use to?
