Platy In Trouble! :(

Help!!

I came home from work today to find one of my Platy's (I have two)with part of it's tail fin missing. He is having trouble swimming (obviously). I have isolated him from the other fish but I was wondering if any one knew whether it will grow back or what I can do to help him.

I have a 60 litre tank - 2 snakeskin Gourami, 2 Platy (one sick), 5 Rosy Tetra, 4 Tetra Neons, 2 Algae Eaters and 5 fish I'm not sure of name. They are small cream coloured. The man in the shop said they were cold water but were fine in Tropical tanks and were placid.

If he looks healthy enough, remaining buoyant/active then so long as it's kept away from other fish that could pick on it whilst injured, and so long as the water is kept clean then fins normally grow back fine.

If there is any wooly white growth or anything odd about it though (ie. not a clean 'bite' / piece missing), then it's more likely to be fin rot so should be treated accordingly.

Also if it is a bite you might want to stick your stocking list/tank size up so people can have a guess at who did it.

Personally I would keep the little guy isolated for a while until he hopefully recovers, I would then closely monitor him to see if he is vulnerable to the other fish you have stocked.

Thanks!! I will go and get some fin rot treatment ASAP to try and help the little guy out a bit.
Hopefully he will get better soon.
