Wasn't sure whether to post this here in in Live-bearers, posted here if wrong please feel free to move :)

I have a platy that has a different tail to the rest, this isnt a problem but I wondered if it's own name ?
it's like a Swordtail but it's in the middle of the tail? Ive done a google search but cant find one like it so thought Id ask :)

I reckon that might be a Platy whose parents were a Platy and a Swordtail. I could be wrong though. A Swordplaty! lol!

yeah, platy/swordtail hybrid
being fairly new to tropical fish this didn't cross my mind
thanks :)

YUP! It's hybrid between a platy and a swordtail. Looks like it's a Sunburst platy. :good:

Same here, never seen one like that either.

But it's a beautiful fish, that's what I'll say!

nice fish this type of platy as been around for years it is known as a Pintail platy males and females get the tail shape

Thanks for the replies :) its nice to know what we really have :)

we was sure it was a female though ? as the anal fin seems more fan shaped ?

Its either a female or possibly badly timed photo caught the male flexing lol

It is a platy/swordtail hybrid but in a lot of shops (or at least the suppliers certainly are) refering to them as 'spadetail platies'. Seems both females and males get the spike in the middle of the tail but its more obvious on males.

well male or female from what Ive read hybrids cant reproduce lol :fish:

thanks for the answers :)

They can still reproduce perfectly fine...

they can ! my quick search this morning was wrong, more likely I was still half asleep and didn't read it properly lol

thanks for putting me right MBOU :) Im here to learn :good:
