I started a gourami tank a few months ago. Tank cycled quickly as I ran an old filter from another tank along with the current filter. Used gravel from old tank as well. Problem with the gravel, I had had crushed coral in the old tank to stablize the ph. (No buffers in water, and ph would plummet below any test kit I could find)

Tank is reading 0 for ammonia, nitrite, 10 for nitrate and 8 ph. Have bought some wood to help lower the ph and also looking for some peat to put in filter.

The tank is a 45 Gallon, stocked with pearl, moonlight, dwarf, powder blue, gold, opaline, honey red, dwarf flame gourami. Also has 2 dwarf neon rainbows

Problem:

I have had 3 platinum gourami all of which died in less than one month. One of which was bought at a different time from different batch. Death happens quickly. The gourami gets red lines in the bottom fin coming from the body of the fish. It looks like blood inside the fin. They lie on the bottom, and 2 days later are dead. Tried treating with a parasite med, but had no effect on the fish.

I really love these fish, and don't want to buy more if they are going to die. I've read they are hearty and easy to look after. Could it be bad batches of fish from the lfs, they can't handle the high ph, or ?????

Any help would be appreciated.

Just found this on another site

Acceptable Water Conditions:
This fish will be bothered by a strong current in the tank, especially if the tank is small. It is also desirable to keep the tank in a room with a temperature as close as possible to the tank water, or risk damaging the labyrinth organ.
Temperature: 77-86° F (25-30° C)
Hardness: 2-25° dH
Ph: 6.0-7.8

Thanks. maybe I should change filter. It is a hob penguin i think. Got it for free. There is no way to slow water coming out and is pretty strong.
