I have just set up a new 50l tank with black gravel, plastic plants and a ceramic (painted) cave thing.
After a day the water turned cloudy, which i assume was bacteria, but there is a very strong plastic smell comming from the tank. Is this normal or should i just keep changing the water until it stops.

There are no fish in the tank and I have a heater (set to 27 centigrade) and a rena filter from another tank which works very well normaly.

Please help?

check both the heater and filter of damage. it may be something as simple as the heater resting against something plastic. either way i would dump the lot. rines all the gear off. but just replace the substrate, filter and heater. something very wrong here!

Might want to check your light strip (if you have one) as well.

that is odd, check everything plastic, and make sure it is a plastic smell.. definitely shoudlnt smell like plastic.. take orniments out and see if they smell strong, as in if they are the cause.. fake plants too.. like i said check EVERYTHING.. if u dont find it, i really dont know what to suggest. maybe if u cant find anything, remove an item, and give it time and see if it still smells. if not, it was that item, if it does try another one, all i can think of atm sorry

could it be that the setup is new,and most electrical items that have any plastic components will give off a plasticky smell untill they are worn in??

That's what I was thinking as well...I seem to recall a "new"smell when I set up my 55gal....

also could it be the smell of silicone not plastic? i bought a new tank last sunday and even when filled with water it stinks to high heaven. ive rinsed and rinsed but no difference, have just put it down to new tank smell (like new car smell its bound to fade over time.......!)

OH buys 'new car smell' in a bottle so it never fades,

Prob just because it is new, had the same thing with a desperate quick buy QT tank I got, it took about 2 weeks to go.
