I have a dual layer of gravel, with rounded sort at the top and underneath that a more gritty layer to help plant growth. However, when I clean the gravel with my suction device, some of the lower substrate seems to inevitably get churned through a bit. At the moment it's not a problem, but I hope to keep corydoras catfish when the tank is mature and don't want them to be on the sharp gravel.
So I had the idea of placing a sort of paving of bits of thin slate between the layers to stop this happening, then I thought well why not use plastic to keep the weight down? But is all plastic safe to use in aquarium water or will some types leach chemicals into the water?
