My tank has been cycling nearly 4 weeks i used filtered media to do this. The last week the plants have been turning brown and algae on the tank as well. I know this is usual for a new tank but is there anything i can do to help prevent it

Cheers smitt_graham

does it look like the plants are decomposing rather than algea??
if it is algea, is the tank in any direct sunlight and how ling do you have the tank light on for ???
, when you say filtered media are you talking of media donated from a matured tank ??

No plants ok just brown stuff on them you can rub it off with your fingers. I used filtered sponges that i put in my new filter some rocks and sand in tights from my other cycled tank. The tank is not in direct sunlight and is on for about 11 hours a day

Anyone got any more advice

Heavy brown algae, even long ugly stringy algae, is reported by many and mentioned as being extremely common during fishless cycling and is nothing to worry about. It can be cleaned periodically during fishless cycling or during a bigger cleaning effort at the point of the large water change at the end of cycling. After that point your water conditions will provide less encouragement for it.

Algae is one of about four skill areas involved in keeping live plants. Algae likes to step in and take advantage of even slight imbalances in the plant environment. The more plants there are and the healthier they are, the less the algae are able to compete. Providing just the right light, just the right plant nutrients and just the right respiratory environment to make the plants healthy will help keep algae away. Many members over in the planted tank forum are experts on this.
