Hey,

I am setting up a 10 UK gallon coldwater aquarium for my girlfriends birthday.

I have currently got this far... [day three]

And was wondering, after people have told me fancy goldfish will bite threw most tropical plants, which plants would be best to use?

And what sort of colour variation do you think would look good against the black rocks and yellow gravel?

Cheers.

Hello Paul,

firstly, your question. Having kept fancy gf as our first fish, I can say that there weren't many plants our didn't chew. We ended up combatting this by using a combination of plastic plants and fast growing plants. This was a little bit of trial and error, if something grew too slow, we moved it to the community tank (following acclimatisation - remember plants can be shocked by water temp & ph too). Vallis is the first one that springs to mind - although this may not give the desired effect!!

Secondly, and not wishing to put a damp on your plans, I would suggest you look again at what can go in the 10G. That may be ok for the goldfishes (depending on how many you keep), but I don't think you'd neccesarily get the best out of them.
Remember, a well cared for goldfish can live for up to 20 years! (although some fancy strains fare less well).

Good Luck!

EDIT: is that a heater in the tank? Most (if not all) gf won't need a heater. In fact it can be severley detremental to their health.

Thank you for the much needed info!

Does indian fern do okay in coldwater tanks? or will the fancy eat that too? I was thinking it might do better as it's thinner and taller? I was also looking at wisteria? what do u think?

I recon vallis would be too long for this tank? I spose i could keep cutting it down.

The fancy has a 30 Gallon waiting for him... My girlfriend and I are moving into our own place in October, where we will set up our 'spare' 30 Gallon tank for him. But for now, as he will be small, and on his own, i think the 10 Gallon would be sufficient?

Thank you!!

okay, had another browse around, and this plant looks perfect...

It's called Potamogeton Gayi, and looks like underwater grass, which I think would look fantastic along with black rocks and yellow gravel?

Does anyone know of a website or big LFS that might sell this stuff?

I live nr london.

cheers.
