I'm thinking of adding some more plants that don't really require added co2 as i don't really want to add a co2 kit just yet. Would like a few different species to add a bit of variation. Also don't mind dosing with fertilisers so can anyone recommend some to me.

Thanks alot, David.

All plants require some form of CO2, it's just that the slower growing species wont need as much CO2 as they don't demand as much light, and they'll be able to take CO2 from the water column that is there as a result of the respiring fishes and plants and also from the air that dissolves into the water.

Species I recommend: Cryptocorynes (especially the broader leaved varieties), Anubias, Mosses, Microsorum, Aponogeton, there are many others however, but they're the main ones.

Swords also are good space fillers that require hardly any CO2.

In order for this to work, you must have low intensity light (one bulb over the tank).

Light is the limiting factor of plant growth, too much and the plants will be photo synthesizing at a rate faster than the CO2 can be replaced through gaseous exchange, and then you will be required to inject CO2, a single T8 running the length of the tank will be fine for a simple set up with no CO2 and ferts for slow growers.

Higher the light the higher the need for ferts and CO2 basicly you cant have one of the three high tech but not the other two its off balance, if plants have more light they will photo synthesize faster using up the naturally occuring CO2 and ferts quicker leading to the need to have them added to the aquarium.

Does anyone really carbonate their aquarium? Total misuse of a sodastream if you ask me.

Never heard of a low carbon consuming plant before, especially when we need plants to before more efficient than ever, isn't this like asking for a shallow breathing pet?

Are you for real.

Can I ask what sort of plants would do well under 2 x 39w T5 bulbs with only dosing of Flourish Excel? Also how long would you leave the lights on for per day to not get algae?

I don't know what lighting the OP uses, but think this would be a good question to ask and not derail the thread too much?

How many gallons are in your tank? No more than 8 hours generally.

If it's the Juwel tank that these tubes belong to then you'll have limited success, ideally you'll need CO2, if not you'll have to block out light from one of the tubes or add surface plants.
