I have 2 x 1.5G tanks bought for my two LFS bettas. They hated being in the bigger 6 gallon tanks (always hid...) so I put them back in their 1.5G Quarantine tanks-they are now happy and back to bubblenesting. However as they are going to be living in there on a permanent basis I wanted to make it more interesting for the fish and nicer looking.

So basically, I don't want huge plants that will invade on swimming space, or any ginormous rock thing that displaces a lot of the tank's already limited water volume, but I would like to do a mini scape with something to keep the two boys interested.

Any ideas?

Depends really what lighting you have and if you are prepared to dose some fertiliser every few days.

You could get away with some mosses, the usual suspects - Java fern (go with the "narrow" form, as its a bit smaller and thinner leaves), Anubias, maybe a small carpeting plant for low light - Marsilea hirsuta might be ok (once transformed from submerged to emersed form).

It will be high light and I will be dosing with ferts. Thanks for the ideas DevUK sounds good! Just after something to add some height at the back...would I get away with some dwarf hairgrass?

I thought it would be a good challenge as I've recently scaped my 63 gallon properly.... thought I'd try something a little smaller this time lol.

Could try some Hemianthus micranthemoides. Its a nice compact stem plant and looks great in smaller setups. I might use some in my larger setup :)
