Have recently had an outbreak of brown algae and thought I would give some plants a go and see if it helps and what the tank looks like with some in there, they have now been in there for a few days.

I realise that these are not the greatest plants in terms of their rates of growth and energy requirements, but just picked those that were on Fatheadminnows guide and also were available in my LFS's.

Just wanted to post my experiences so far because the LFS were convinced that all of the plants would be ripped to shreds within minutes.

ANUBIAS 2 plants tied to some fragments of clay pot - The Crabro decided to have a bit of a go at a leaf but didnt actually tear it, other than that completely ignored by all occupants.
CRYPTOCORYNE WENDTII 2 plants roots through a clay ring buried in sand and surrounded by a heap of shells - Got a little more attention than the Anubias, seems ok at this moment will post again if they get dug up, the perlmutts seem to like the new shoots.
JAVA FERN 1 plant - Don't think any of them have noticed it, no tears in leaves, the crabro picked the spore sack things of the underside of leaves but plant undamaged.

My fish do get a bit of greenery, peas, lettuce or cucumber every 3 or 4 days so maybe they dont feel they need it, but following the great guide on here has produced a successful foray into plants in a malawi tank for me. Thanks Fatminnowhead.

i have had som similar experiences, i was always told that java fern were very hardy and fast growing, but i cant seem to have much luck with them, mine dont seem to have grown at all and some of the leaves just turn brown :( I don't know if you like the look of amazon swords but i have also had good luck with these. the leaves seem to be thick enough like the anubias so tha the fish can destroy them. would really like to see a pic of your tank with the plants now!
